At the Seville European Film Festival, the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announced the nominations for the 25th European Film Awards. Leading the field is AMOUR , Michael Haneke’s moving French language kammerspiel about an elderly couple with six nominations, including film, directing and screenplay for Haneke, cinematography for Darius Khondji and two acting nominations for Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant.
It is followed by two films with five nominations each: Thomas Vinterberg’s Danish drama THE HUNT about a man accused of child molestation (film, directing and screenplay for Vinterberg, the latter shared with Tobias Lindholm, as well as Mads Mikkelsen as actor) and Steve McQueen’s drama SHAME about a man’s sex addiction (film, directing, Michael Fassbender as actor and Sean Bobbitt for cinematography).
The remaining three films nominated for European Film are German political drama BARBARA by Christian Petzold (with a second nomination for leading actress Nina Hoss), the Shakespeare adaptation set in an Italian prison CAESAR MUST DIE by Italian veteran filmmaker brothers Paolo & Vittorio Taviani (additional nominations for this film go to the directors and editor Roberto Perpignani) and the international comedy hit from France, UNTOUCHABLE by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, who are also nominated for their screenplay. A third nomination goes to the lead actors François Cluzet and Omar Sy.
The fifth nomination for European Director garnered Nuri Bilge Ceylan for the Turkish crime drama ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA . Gökhan Tiryaki received an additional nomination for the Carlo di Palma European Cinemathographer Award for this film.
Four nominations go to Tomas Alfredson’s British spy thriller TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY – Gary Oldman as European Actor, Hoyte Van Hoytema for cinematography, Maria Djurkovic as Production Designer and Alberto Iglesias for European Composer.
Roman Polanski’s adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s theatre play CARNAGE received nominations for the screenplay, as well as Kate Winslet as European Actress.
Alexander Sokurov’s adaptation of Goethe’s classic play FAUST is nominated for cinematography (Bruno Delbonnel) and production design (Elena Zhukova), while Nikolaij Arcel’s historical Danish drama A ROYAL AFFAIR is nominated for composer (Cyrille Aufort & Gabriel Yared) and production design (Niels Sejer).
One nomination each received Cristian Mungiu for the script of his religious drama BEYOND THE HILLS , the actresses Margarethe Tiesel in Ulrich Seidl’s PARADISE: LOVE and Emilie Dequenne in Joachim Lafosse’s OUR CHILDREN . George Fenton was nominated for his score of Ken Loach’s THE ANGELS’ SHARE as was François Couturier for his score for SHUN LI AND THE POET .
After speeches by Seville Film Festival director José Luis Cienfuegos, the general director of the Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales, Susana de la Sierra, and Vice Chairman of the EFA board, Nik Powell, the nominations in the different categories were announced by EFA board members Antonio Perez Perez and Antonio Saura, directors Agnès Varda and Dagur Kári, actresses Victoria Abril, Laia Marull, Clara Lago and Maria Valverde, Karlovy Vary Film Festival artistic director Karel Och, as well as actors Daniel Grao and Andrés Velencoso.
The 2,700 EFA Members will now vote for the winners which will be presented during the awards ceremony on 1 December in Malta.
