TED Conferences, in collaboration with Chimney, a global creative studio, has released a short animated film celebrating girls and women around the globe on International Women’s Day (Sunday, March 8).
With audio from a 2016 TED Talk–”Teach girls bravery, not perfection”–given by Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, TED’s filmmaking goal was to create a memorable and approachable story to teach girls that they will be loved and accepted not for being perfect, but for being courageous.
Chimney’s design lead Abigail Kim breathed life into the look and feel of the film with imperfect-yet-beautiful painted textures and a carefully controlled color palette that keeps the focus on the message and adds a human touch to the characters and their story. The visual narrative taps into the powerful imagination of a little girl and brings a sense of immediacy to the underlying message: we must give women the tools early in life to develop courage, insightful thinking, and leadership–and to embrace imperfection as a form of those very traits.
Sean Eno, creative director at Chimney, said, “As the dad of two courageous young girls, this subject is on my mind, literally 24/7. One of the greatest joys in my life is coming home at night to my girls and showing them a project that can make a real difference in the world. So I was thrilled when Kristin Wheeler at TED approached us to tell this story–to help create a video set to the stirring words of Reshma Saujani’s TED Talk.”
