CHANEL commissioned Alma Har’el to write and direct this short film. Titled JellyWolf, this surreal eight-minute short made for i-D’s digital platform The Fifth Sense, in partnership with CHANEL, stars Lisa Bonet and Kiersey Clemons. The film was produced by BRF (B-Reel Films) which represents Har’el in the U.K. (she is handled by Epoch Films in the U.S.).
Inspired by scent as a purveyor of memory and identity, the film takes the viewer on a wild journey into their inner pysche. The result is a spectacular trippy love letter to women. JellyWolf follows the character portrayed by Clemons who carries a box of mementos inspired by the key ingredients of Chanel’s No5 L’Eau–lemon, wood and rose–as she embarks on a visually spectacular sojourn inspired by the memories each scent conjures. With each new vision she unlocks, she deepens her understanding of the woman she is, as well as her connection to her grandmother and other women in her life.
JellyWolf is driven by a score featuring original music by Emile Haynie, Natasha Khan (musician Bat for Lashes, also recently signed to BRF as a director), and Sexwitch (a musical collaboration between Natasha Khan and TOY).
A strong global voice for women’s rights and the power of female creativity, Har’el last September launched #FreeTheBid, an initiative designed to put female directors more consistently in the running for commercials and branded content projects.
