This short film titled Mom Talk is part of a digital series of trailers directed by Arturo Perez Jr. to promote Samantha Jayne’s book "Quarter Life Poetry: Poems for the Young, Broke and Hangry." The trailers offer candid, humorous insights into Millennials and their struggles on such fronts as jaded friends, lonely nights, workplace malaise and the like.
In Mom Talk, we meet a 20-something woman who’s constantly calling her mom on the phone, asking questions such as what’s a W9, what’s a dependent, what’s my social security number, when is Thanksgiving, do you have my birth certificate? She even texts a picture of her opened mouth to mom to get feedback as to whether or not her tongue looks weird.
Yet when mom calls to ask a question about her daughter’s childhood toy which she found in the hall closet, the 20-something immediately affirms “I’m an adult.”
Parting supers read, “Who are we kidding?”/”The struggle is real”/”This book will help.”
Offering her rationale for the digital trailer series–which is a unique way to promote a new author’s work–Jayne related, “Arturo and I wanted to create videos that really get to the heart of what 'Quarter Life Poetry' is about: how we actually feel in our 20s. At this age, we act like we have it all together– but in reality, we’re still figuring out how to do the whole ‘adult’ thing. I started 'Quarter Life Poetry' to try and connect with other people my age, and Arturo and I hope these videos can elicit a knowing chuckle from our fellow 20-somethings.”
Perez and writer/actress Jayne independently produced the digital film series. Separately for commercials and branded content, Perez is on the directorial roster of Room Two. Under the aegis of executive producer/partner Susan Rued Anderson, Room Two is part of the family of Block Partners’ production companies (which include such notable entrepreneurial shops as GARTNER and The Devil You Know).
