The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) unveiled the winners of the very first Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards which took place on Sunday evening (12/11) at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Leading the way with 15 wins was Netflix followed by Disney+ with four. "Heartstopper" topped the program tally with four wins. "Kid Cosmic" was next with two.
“This weekend’s ceremonies herald an exciting milestone in our Emmy® award history,” said NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp who noted that the Sunday ceremony marked “the first standalone expansion of the Emmy Award competition since 1979.”
Hosting the proceedings was actor, comedian and three-time Emmy nominee Jack McBrayer who’s best known to audiences as Kenneth the Page on “30 Rock” and for his appearances in more than 80 skits on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” McBrayer is also the star of the Apple TV+ series “Hello, Jack! The Kindness Show.”
Among the evening’s highlights was Laurence Fishburne presenting Lifetime Achievement honors to LeVar Burton for his countless contributions to children and the television industry. Plus there was a special performance by the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. With a focus on disenfranchised Black and Latino communities, the world class faculty and staff members of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy use dance, theater, and performance to enrich, inspire and transform the lives of their students.
The Children’s & Family awards drew almost 3,000 entries and marks the successful culmination of the first full year of the realignment between NATAS and the Television Academy.
