    Film Independent issues call for Spirit Award entries

    Film Independent president Josh Welsh announced that the call for entries for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards is now open.  The regular deadline is Tuesday, September 16, and the final deadline is Tuesday, October 14. The nominations will be announced on November 25, 2014 in a press conference. Piaget is returning as a premier sponsor. The Awards, which will be held on February 21, 2015, will premiere later that evening exclusively on IFC.

    The Film Independent Spirit Awards include the following categories: Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Director, Best Screenplay, John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for a budget under $500,000), Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best International Film, Best Documentary and the Robert Altman Award. The Filmmaker Grants include the Piaget Producers Award, the Truer Than Fiction Award, and the Someone to Watch Award.

    As the first event to exclusively honor independent film, the Film Independent Spirit Awards has made a name for itself as the premier awards show for the indie film community. Artists who have received industry recognition first at the Spirit Awards include Joel and Ethan Coen, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Ashley Judd, Robert Rodriguez, David O. Russell, Edward Burns, Aaron Eckhart, Neil LaBute, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman, Hilary Swank, Marc Forster, Todd Field, Christopher Nolan, Zach Braff, Amy Adams, and Lena Dunham.

    In addition to celebrating the broad spectrum of independent filmmaking, the Spirit Awards is also the primary fundraiser for Film Independent’s year-round programs, which cultivate the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity in the industry.

    WWE’s “Monday Night RAW” Netflix debut averages 2.6M households in U.S., had 4.9M views globally

    The first episode of World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night RAW" on Netflix had 4.9 million viewers globally and 2.6 million households in the U.S., according to VideoAmp. Monday's three-hour show from the Intuit Dome outside of Los Angeles kicked off WWE's 10-year partnership with Netflix. The agreement, reached last January, is worth in excess of $5 billion with an option for Netflix to extend for an additional 10 years or opt out after five. "RAW" averaged 1.2 million viewers last year on USA Network, according to Nielsen. Using Nielsen figures, it would be the highest-viewed episode since last year's April 8 show, which was the night after WrestleMania, averaged 2.36 million in the U.S. According to WWE, it was the most-viewed episode in five years. The global figures do not include the 92 countries or territories where Netflix doesn't yet distribute WWE, which includes France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea. Netflix — which has 282.3 million subscribers in more than 190 countries — is the exclusive home of "Raw" in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Latin America, with additional countries to be added over time.
