    Casting set for “Chopin,” the feature directing debut of Valiant Pictures’ Vincent Lin

    Eddie Liu (Kung Fu, Never Have I Ever, Silicon Valley) and Golden Horse Film Award winners Chen Shu-Fang (Little Big Women, Dear Tenant) and Leon Dai (Your Name Engraved Herein, Cannot Live Without You) are set to star in the upcoming feature film Chopin, a first-generation Taiwanese-American immigrant story set in suburban America. Chen Shu-Fang and Leon Dai cemented their legacy in film history with over 90 years combined acting in television and feature films out of Taiwan, rising the ranks to become among the country’s most notable talents.

    Chopin is the feature directorial debut from commercial director Vincent Lin of Valiant Pictures. Matthew D’Amato, Valiant’s co-founder, is executive producer on the feature (Clementine, Snakehead). Casting directors include Ashley Ingram and Michael D’Amato (The United States vs. Billie Holiday, When They See Us). HuiChieh Danielle Yen of Select Entertainment TW serves as consultant and production partner. Production is slated to start in early 2023.

    Chopin tells the story of Chopin Wu (Liu), who returns home to small-town America where he grew up to amend an estranged relationship with his workaholic father (Dai). With a sudden appearance from his ailing grandmother (Shu-Fang), Chopin Wu is confronted by a past he had left behind. In the midst of a health crisis and a broken family, he is forced to re-examine old relationships, embrace a heritage he once denied, and discover the importance of family and identity. 

    Lin noted, “As a first-generation Taiwanese American, like many first-generation immigrants, we grew up between two worlds. This generational, language, and cultural gap created a dissonance that often translated into misunderstandings, prejudice, and dissension within our own families as well as the community and relationships around us. Drawing upon my personal upbringing of immigrant family assimilation, the story of Chopin explores bridging that gap and what it means to be Asian American… And is that any different than being simply American?”

    Liu is repped by Greene & Associates Talent Agency. Shu-Fang and Dai are repped and managed by Select Entertainment TW.

    What will happen to CNBC and MSNBC when they no longer have a corporate connection to NBC News?

    Comcast's corporate reorganization means that there will soon be two television networks with "NBC" in their name — CNBC and MSNBC — that will no longer have any corporate connection to NBC News. How that affects viewers of those networks, along with the people who work there, still needs to shake out. Their new corporate leader, Mark Lazarus, visited the set of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" as the plan was being announced on Wednesday and spoke to network staff members during a morning conference call to address concerns. Comcast is spinning off most of its cable networks, also including USA, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and the Golf Channel, into a separate company. That recognizes how streaming is considered the future and the cable networks are a drag on the bottom line. In the space of a lifetime, the networks went from upstarts aside a legacy operation like NBC to profitable superstars to castoffs. Questions range from the simple to complex Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Universal Media Group, is becoming CEO of the newly-formed company of cable networks, temporarily dubbed "SpinCo." Cesar Conde, who as NBC Universal News Group chairman had oversight of CNBC and MSNBC, will lose those networks from his portfolio, yet remain in charge of NBC News, NBC News Now streaming, Telemundo and the news operations of the NBC-owned local stations. The presence of Lazarus and Anand Kini, who will be chief operating officer and chief financial officer of SpinCo, is a good sign for the new company, said Jessica Reif Ehrlich, research analyst for the Bank of America.
