    “Avatar: The Way of Water” named Best Film At AACTA International Awards

    The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) unveiled the winners for the 12th AACTA International Awards, honoring the world’s best achievements in screen excellence.

    James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water took the marquee award for Best Film, however it was black tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin that lead this year’s film categories with three wins–Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson), Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon), and Best Screenplay (Martin McDonagh). 

    Australian actress Cate Blanchett won her third International AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress in Film for her performance in Tár. Blanchett has previously received this award for Carol (2015) and Blue Jasmine (2013).

    Elvis added two more AACTA Awards to its collection after receiving 11 at the Australian Academy’s domestic Awards in December last year. Baz Luhrmann took Best Direction and Austin Butler was crowned Best Lead Actor.

    Australian productions and talent also triumphed on the small screen, with ABC’s Mystery Road: Origin taking home Best Drama Series, as well as Best Lead Actor in a Series for Mark Coles Smith. 

    The White Lotus: Sicily has gone back-to-back for Best Comedy Series, with season 1 winning at the AACTA International Awards last year. Jennifer Coolidge, who plays the often rude, always-hilarious Tanya McQuoid in the series, took the International AACTA Award for Best Actress. 

    AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said, “The Australian Academy is proud to be able to celebrate and acknowledge some of the most compelling productions from this past year and show our appreciation for the talented screen practitioners who inspire and entertain us. It is also wonderful to see Australia’s Mystery Road: Origin and Elvis recognized on the international stage, as well as the talented Cate Blanchett and Mark Coles Smith. Australia’s screen industry is booming, and these awards demonstrate that our content is lauded worldwide.”

    Kevin Costner to receive MPSE Filmmaker Award; Greg Hedgepath named recipient of MPSE Career Achievement honor

    Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) will present Oscar®-winning filmmaker and actor Kevin Costner with the 2025 MPSE Filmmaker Award, bestowed annually to a filmmaker of distinction. And supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath will receive the Career Achievement Award for his prolific career in sound editing. Both awards will be presented during MPSE’s 72nd Annual Golden Reel Awards Gala on February 23, 2025 at the Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

    The MPSE Filmmaker Award is bestowed upon an individual outside the sound community whose career has demonstrated a great appreciation and understanding of the impact of sound editing. The MPSE Career Achievement Award is presented to a person whose career has made a significant impact on the sound community through exemplary work, service or leadership.

    “Kevin Costner has captivated audiences with his powerful storytelling throughout his illustrious career,” said MPSE president David Barber. “From epic Westerns to poignant dramas, his use of sound as an integral component of his cinematic storytelling has stirred our emotions and immersed viewers in the worlds he’s created for decades. This passion for sound is abundantly clear in his latest ambitious project, the Horizon saga. We are thrilled to honor him with the Filmmaker Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the art of storytelling through sound in film and television.”
