"Game of Thrones" Tops 1st Night of Creative Arts Emmy Awards With 9 Wins

"People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" next with four Emmys
  • LOS ANGELES
  • --

Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony was only the first half of the proceedings as winners in the remaining categories will be announced tomorrow evening (9/11). The Creative Arts Emmys for the first time are being spread out over two nights to accommodate what’s been an ever growing number of categories and to streamline what had become a long, unwieldy show when confined to a single evening. Still a pattern is already starting to emerge this year as the two shows with the highest number of nominations--”Game of Thrones” (HBO) with 23 nods, and “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (FX Networks) with 22--came away the big winners on night one of the Creative Arts honors. “Game of Thrones” earned nine Emmy Awards with “People v. O.J. Simpson” taking four statuettes.

The “Game of Thrones” tally included Emmys for visual effects, production design, casting, costumes, sound mixing, makeup and stunt coordination while “People v. O.J. Simpson” nabbed Emmys for editing, casting, sound mixing and hair styling.

Yet not all the results were predictable as Peter Scolari was a first-time Emmy winner. He captured the best guest actor in a comedy series award for “Girls” (HBO) in which he portrays father to the character portrayed by series creator Lena Dunham . Scolari was not even on the original list of category nominees. But he entered the running for the Emmy when Peter MacNicol was pulled from the competition upon it being determined that he had appeared in too many episodes of “Veep” (HBO) to be considered a “guest actor.”

Backstage, Scolari was gratified to win the award, noting that he remembered first meeting Dunham during the early stages of the series. At the time, said Scolari, she was unafraid to tap into the expertise of others when she didn’t know something. Three months later, he continued, Dunham was an accomplished director and had become an actor who could improvise and ad lib on a high level. Seeing her progression in such a short time convinced Scolari that Dunham was a creative force whose influence would be felt in TV as well as features.

Meanwhile Tina Fey and Amy Poehler won the Emmy as hosts of last year’s “Saturday Night Live” Xmas episode. They were honored jointly in the best guest actresses in a comedy series category. The Emmy was the first for Poehler but part of a collection for Fey. She’s won eight times before, including acting and writing trophies.

On the drama series side, Hank Azaria was honored as best guest actor for “Ray Donovan” and Margo Martindale of “The Americans” won as best guest actress.

Diane Warren won the Emmy for best original music and lyrics for “Til It Happens to You,” Lady Gaga’s song from the documentary “The Hunting Ground,” about campus rape. The song also was an Oscar and Grammy nominee.

Among other notable winners on opening night of the Creative Arts Emmys were James Hawkinson, a first time nominee who topped the Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series category on the strength of the pilot for “The Man In The High Castle” (Amazon); Kabir Akhtar, ACE, for best Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series for the pilot of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (CW); and Peter Chakos for Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series on the basis of “The Opening Night Excitation” of The Big Bang Theory (CBS).

An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies will be telecast on FXX at 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Sept. 17.

The next evening, ABC will present the live telecast of the primetime Emmy Awards.
