A teenage boy is talking into the camera, but we’re hard pressed to understand what in the world he’s saying. Clearly the youngster is pouring out his heart—tears flow as he sobs out his story. He seems so needy, yet because the audio has been intentionally garbled, we can only make out a few emotion-laden words: "… panicking … alone … Dad, Dad …"
Our inability to understand the teenager is the message of this public service spot for the Teen Line, a Southern California-based telephone hotline in which teens can get help by talking to trained teenaged counselors. A pair of supers simply states, "Sometimes it takes a teenager" / "to really understand a teenager." The PSA is tagged with the Teen Line logo accompanied by phone numbers (310-855-HOPE in the Los Angeles area, 1-800-TLC-TEEN for the rest of California) and a Web site address (www.teenlineonline.org).
Established in 1981, Teen Line is affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The help line is open daily, 6 p.m.-10 p.m., and staffed by five or more trained teen volunteer listeners. These volunteers are supervised by mental health professionals whose job is to support them, debrief after difficult calls, and determine whether a particular call requires immediate intervention by emergency services. Teen Line offers counseling, help and a concerned ear to teens grappling with such problems as drugs, gangs, homelessness, pregnancy, AIDS and physical/mental abuse. The hotline is also equipped to deal with crisis cases like suicide calls.
Teen Line turned to a creative ensemble at El Segundo, Calif.-based agency Team One Advertising to come up with the PSA concept. The Team One artisans were copywriter Jeff Spiegel, art director Robert Prins and producers Beth Hagen and Nikki Shea.
Team One tabbed director Brent Thomas of Green Dot Films, Santa Monica, for the project. Thomas was backed by a Green Dot support team that included executive producer Rick Fishbein and producer Ursula Gabel. The DP was Kirk Bachman.
"Understand" was edited by Ben Longland at Rock Paper Scissors, Santa Monica. Randy Lowder and Mark Wilkens of R!OT Santa Monica served as online editor and colorist, respectively. Audio mixer was Andy Snavely via Mike Recording Services, West Los Angeles.
Snavely was also composer/sound designer for Chris Bell & Co., West Los Angeles. Mike Recording Services and Chris Bell & Co. are sister shops.
