“Stanley, I’m sending you to Boston to make a good impression on the clients,” says the head honcho.
The young male employee is a bit perplexed at his being selected for the key business trip. “Okay, but why me?” he asks immodestly.
“Because you’re likable,” responds the boss. “Everyone likes you.”
“I doubt that,” says an unassuming Stanley.
“No, seriously,” affirms the employer who to prove his point adds, “Watch.”
At that point, the boss picks up a nearby small cactus plant which is in a clay pot. He throws the pot at an unsuspecting employee who’s seated at his desk. The impact hurts the worker who also has to deal with the prickly cactus and accompanying pot stuck to his back.
Understandably upset, the victim stands up and raises his voice, “Who threw that?”
The boss sheepishly points at Stanley. The mood of the cactus-stricken employee changes immediately.
“Stanley, you’re so funny,” says the worker, the cactus still hanging from him.
He sits down at his cubicle and resumes working on his computer, typing away at the keyboard. “How does he come up with this stuff?” laughs the employee as if paying homage to Stanley’s inventive sense of humor.
A voiceover intervenes as we next see Stanley enjoying a meal at a hotel.
“They chose you for a reason,” relates the voiceover. “And you chose Embassy Suites for a reason–like our complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast. Embassy Suites Hotels. Everything for a reason.”
Titled “Likable,” this spot is one of two in an Embassy Suites campaign directed by Jim Jenkins of bicoastal/international Hungry Man for TBWA/Chiat/Day, New York. The other commercial, “Sentences,” depicts a woman who constantly interrupts her boss, completing his sentences, but inaccurately. Tired of her annoying habit, the boss gives a plum business trip assignment to another female employee. The other worker was picked for good reason, as is Embassy Suites.
The TBWA/Chiat/Day creative ensemble on “Likable” consisted of executive creative director Gerry Graf, creative directors Joel Rodriguez and Matt Elhardt, copywriter Brandon Davis and Jenny McGuinness, art directors Crystal English and Meg Sewell, director of broadcast production Ozzie Spenningsby, and producer Jason Souter.
