Running broadband video ads on social networking sites is a prime way to reach teens, according to a recent eMarketer study, which notes that social networking sites are a leading communications technology used by teens.
The study, Communications Technologies Used By U.S. Tweens and Teens, examined the use of landline phones, e-mail, cellphones, instant messaging, text messaging and social networking sites, by both age groups in December, 2006.
While an equal number of both groups use landline phones, teens were much higher in every other category, including e-mail (94 percent to 66 percent), cellphones (86 percent to 64 percent) and social networking sites (68 percent to 19 percent).
The vast disparity in social networking sites indicates they are a primary vehicle for reaching teens but not tweens, a younger group.
The eMarketer study is based on data from Harris Interactive.
