This :30 is a refreshing departure from the fast food advertising norm. Instead of live-action photography romancing the food, McClain Finlon Advertising, Denver, opted to go with animation to help whet the appetite of TV viewers for the lunch fare at Einstein Bros. Restaurants, a chain best known for its bagels. Relatively speaking, Einstein comes off quite well compared to traditional menus. And just as importantly, this spot advances the message that Einstein Bros. isn’t just a bagel bakery, but also a great alternative for lunch goers.
Director Jonathan Hodgson of London-based studio Sherbet infused the spot with a smart, fun, stylish brand of animation. "Taste Bud" opens on a bright smiling sun. A couple of doves flit by and hold up a banner across the bottom of the sun. The sign poses the start of a question, "Ever seen a taste bud … "
The query continues, "in full bloom?" as the sun is replaced by a budding sunflower. We are then furnished with the answer for what tantalizes taste buds: the Cobbie, which is smoked turkey, peppered bacon, avocado, veggies and gorgonzola mayonnaise on challah bread. An animation rendition of the sandwich indeed looks mouthwatering, while positioning Einstein Bros. as a hip, stylish place to have lunch without putting a dent in your pocketbook. A Cobbie goes for $3.99.
The spot is tagged with a bagel-shaped "Einstein Brothers For Lunch" logo, which pictures the two brothers eyeing the world through bagel "monocles." The logo is surrounded by four words: Mind, Mouth, Soul and Lunch.
Hodgson’s collaborators at Sherbet were animator Jonny Hannah, executive producer Jonathan Bairstow and producer Rachel Matchett. Hodgson also edited the job.
The creative team at McClain Finlon consisted of chief creative officer Tom Leydon, creative directors Jeff Martin and Gregg Bergan, art director Dan Buchmeier, copywriter Chase Claussen and producer Carol Williams.
Audio mixer was Gannon Kashiwa of Rocky Mountain Recorders, Denver. Music composer was Soren Gray of Ten Music, Santa Monica.
Charity James was the principal voiceover talent for "Taste Bud."
The SAG/AFTRA Commercials Contract Standing Committee has granted a waiver to allow commercials to be available for viewing on SHOOTonline.com. The spots cannot be copied, downloaded or emailed.
