London-based commercial and feature post house VTR recently completed one of the earliest television commercials to undergo a full 2k digital intermediate postproduction process. This process has been embraced for a growing number of feature film and longform television projects, and more and more industry leaders have come to believe that it will become ubiquitous in the coming years.
While the description of a digital intermediate can vary, "Drummer," directed by Tarsem of bicoastal/international @radical.media for Publicis, London, was shot on 35mm film, transferred to 2k for all postproduction—including 2k compositing/conforming and 2k digital color timing—and then outputted back to film for theatrical release (a PAL version was also created for broadcasting in Europe).
SHOOT Online subscribers may read this week’s Top Spot of the Week in full by accessing the Current Issue in the Members Area. The SAG/AFTRA Commercials Contract Standing Committee has granted a waiver to allow commercials to be available for viewing on SHOOTonline.com. The spots cannot be copied, downloaded or e-mailed.
