Coincidentally, two of the three directors of photography profiled in SHOOT’s Special Report on cinematography have recently worked on spots for Coca-Cola. Max Malkin completed double duty for the soft drink maker, with a campaign for Diet Coke, directed by Phil Joanou of bicoastal Villains, and a commercial for Coke, directed by feature filmmaker Jim Sheridan, who is represented by bicoastal The Industry for spot work. And DP Andrzej Sekula—who, in addition to DPing commercials, has acted as cinematographer on films such as Pulp Fiction and American Psycho—recently completed work on a Coke ad helmed by Ralf Schmerberg, of bicoastal/international @radical.media. Look for Sekula to perhaps one day direct.
While Barry Peterson may not have DP’d a Coke ad, he has been quite busy of late turning out visually arresting spots for directors such as Kinka Usher and Tim Burton, and is about to embark on his second feature film.
What all three cinematographers have in common is an ability to work with a director to bring the visual aspects of a spot to life. Enjoy SHOOT’s look at DPs, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
