FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, our NODANCE.com Film & Multimedia Festival has used DVD technology to present its film selections. For our third annual festival (to be held Jan. 22-25 in Park City, Utah), DVD continues to provide a portable, high-quality presentation medium for filmmakers, and also helps avoid the costly expenses incurred while creating a film print.
For the commercial community, the superior sound and visual quality of DVD make it an excellent choice as a calling card reel for directors, visual effects artists and other industry creatives. With the current crop of affordable desktop-level authoring and encoding programs available for DVD creation, it will be even easier for many in the industry to create their own DVDs and replicate the discs for very little cost. Additionally, DVD titles beg for content, and advertisers can reach key markets by strategic commercial placement.
To expand its reach, NODANCE.com will also turn to other emerging digital technology. This year we will feature a streaming digital film market, whereby the professional community will be able to view the showcased films via computer modem. Utilizing the Internet will alleviate any worries from distributors, agents, production company executives, advertising agency creatives and producers about conflicting schedules, sold-out screenings or expensive festival passes. Via the Internet, these professionals are able to easily log on to a festival’s market section and view the films at their leisure.
The combination of DVD and digital technology breaks down barriers for young filmmakers, and digital festivals are a true hotbed for numerous indie visionaries who have drive, passion and creativity in spades. These directors open wide the opportunities for trend-specific advertising with their ability to bring the next hot trend to the surface of mainstream culture. These directors are an endemic part of the youth culture (the average director is under 30)—the exact market section that advertisers want to reach. These directors can speak to this market because they are part of it, and their voices reach out to this segment of society in an unquestionably genuine fashion.
NODANCE.com began screening music videos last year because we realized that the music video is an extremely important experimental medium. At the festival, music video directors can showcase their creativity, and companies looking for commercially viable talent can find new voices. Additionally, since many commercial directors are interested in crossing over into directing feature films, a digital festival provides the perfect market atmosphere in the indie proving ground of Park City, Utah.
So instead of listening to more reasons why DVD and digital technology are important to the commercial community, it’s time to investigate. Multimedia film festivals are a great place to start.
