Shortly after unveiling the five nominees for the fourth annual primetime Emmy Award recognizing commercialmaking as an art form, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) disqualified one of the spots: Monster.com’s "When I Grow Up" directed by Bryan Buckley of bicoastal/international hungry man for Wenham, Mass.-based agency Mullen.
ATAS rejected the ad last week (7/20) upon determining that it premiered prior to Emmy’s eligibility period for original airing-June 1, ’99 to May 31, 2000. "When I Grow Up" made an auspicious debut during the January ’99 Super Bowl telecast and went on to garner industry recognition, including a Bronze Lion at last year’s Cannes International Advertising Festival.
ATAS VP John Leverence said it was "unfortunate" that the spot was announced as a nominee. He explained that "with the information we [originally] had, there was no evidence of ineligibility. The date listed on the [ad agency] entry form was specific and within the eligibility period."
An informed ATAS source characterized the monster.com Emmy situation as "a misunderstanding," with the ad agency entering the spot but mistakenly listing an inaccurate debut date. A SHOOT phone call to Edward Boches, executive creative director at Mullen, had not been returned at press time.
When the question of the spot’s initial air date was raised following the nomination announcement, ATAS looked further into the matter and decided to strip the ad of its nomination. "When I Grow Up" was replaced with the next commercial in line based on judges’ scoring: Ameritrade’s "Let’s Light This Candle" directed by Dewey Nicks of bicoastal Epoch Films for OgilvyOne, New York.
Ironically, "Let’s Light This Candle" and "When I Grow Up" both figured prominently in the Directors Guild of America (DGA) commercial director of the year competition several months ago. The latter ad was one of the entries that helped Buckley win the DGA Award as best spot director of ’99 (SHOOT, 3/17, p. 1). Meanwhile, "Let’s Light This Candle" was one of the commercials that contributed to Nicks earning a DGA nomination.
