After a year at the helm of New York-based Wildvine Music, composers Tim Cloherty and Peter Klinger have launched Sound of Science, a music/sound design house, also in New York.
Cloherty and Klinger, who served as producers/composers at Wildvine, had to relinquish their producing responsibilities this past January, after the shops parent company, New York-based Three Tree Productions, hired former Pink Noise, New York executive producer Frank DiMinno to take over the shops management. We left on good terms, Cloherty commented. We helped them establish Wildvine [and then] decided to go out on our own.
Clohertys and Klingers credits at Wildvine included Fruit of the Looms Tempted via Warwick Baker ONeill, New York; Sprites The Dead Cometh via Burrell Communications Group, Chicago; and AT&Ts Basketball via Uniworld Group, New York.
Klingers background includes his being assistant radio producer/chief audio engineer at DMB&B, New York. He joined the agency in 84, originally with only the latter title. Prior to DMB&B, Klinger had been an assistant producer at New York visual effects house Charlex.
Before joining Wildvine, Cloherty spent 10 years performing as a singer in the music band The Rakes Progress. (Klinger was the drummer.) In 95, The Rakes Progress was signed by Almo Records-the same record label as the rock group Garbage-but lost the contract three years later. Everyone was sour about that, said Cloherty. Soon afterward, The Rakes Progress disbanded.
Now executive producers/ composers, Cloherty and Klinger will focus on the advertising industry. Sound of Science also has non-exclusive spot agreements with composers Brendan Ryan and brother Bill Ryan from the band The Bogmen, Doug Corella of The Verve Pipe, and solo performer Dan Petty.
Additionally, Sound of Science will act as a producer for independent musicians. Most recently, the company produced and arranged a CD for New York-based singer Alistair Binks. Were not looking to solely be a jingle house, said Cloherty.
Sound of Sciences one-room studio is equipped with Digital Performer 2.7 and ProTools 5.0 workstations. The shop also maintains a licensing library of sounds and musical scores. Cloherty and Klinger presently serve as Sound of Sciences reps.
