Anton Corbijn and Fabien Baron have joined the spot directorial roster of Serial Pictures. A noted filmmaker/photographer, Corbijn helmed the cult classic Control which followed the life of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and was honored at the Cannes Film Festival, British Independent Film Awards, and British Academy Film Awards. Other feature credits include The American starring George Clooney, and A Most Wanted Man, one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s final films.
Corbijn’s frequent creative direction for U2 and Depeche Mode, concepting the visuals and live performances, has led him to often be referred to as the “fifth band member” of both groups. His highly recognizable photo portraits of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Björk, Robert De Niro, Stephen Hawking and more, are revered in the art, music and fashion communities. In addition, Corbijn has directed several music videos for the likes of U2, Nirvana, Coldplay, and most recently Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor.”
Corbijn has now turned his focus to spots, first making the jump with last year’s Miss Dior commercial featuring Natalie Portman. The ad portrays Natalie’s Miss Dior character as a rebel bride, fleeing her picture-perfect life, in the spirit of true independence.
Fabien Baron
Meanwhile Baron is a renowned creative director in fashion. A sought-after fashion advisor, Baron has been called in by Italian Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, French Vogue, and Interview to revamp their publications. He has left his fingerprints on most luxury brands, art directing for top designers, from Calvin Klein to Harry Winston, from Balenciaga to Ian Schrager Hotels. He has helped shape the image of countless famous talents such as Mark Wahlberg, Kate Moss, and Madonna.
Baron has directed spots for Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent. He directed Calvin Klein’s first Super Bowl ad in 2013, creating major post-Game buzz around the new face of the brand, Matthew Terry. Alongside David Fincher, Baron co-created the Calvin Klein “Downtown” campaign featuring Rooney Mara. Baron is concentrating on a commercialmaking career via Serial Pictures.
Violaine Etienne, founding partner/EP of Serial Pictures, noted, “Fabien and Anton are originators. Their filmmaking is defined by a strong visual concept and multi-disciplinary approach that makes them an obvious fit within our community of creatives. Our clients are inspired by everything from music to pop culture, from fashion to art, and these directors continually bring those unique external influences into their advertising work.”
Sinners and Saints Adds Apple Pie To Its Branded Menu
Bicoastal Sinners and Saints--the multidisciplinary studio overseen by managing director/executive producer Heather Heller, and partners/EPs Yann Henric and Thomas Carroll--has added Apple Pie Tabletop to its roster for branded content. Known for its food and beverage content creation, Apple Pie comprises the husband-and-wife team of director/DP Gene Dubin and director/art director Alisa Volodina. In addition to representation, the move expands Apple Pie’s production capabilities through the combination of its centrally located full-service studio in New York and a newly established mobile studio in Los Angeles. Apple Pie recently teamed with Sinners and Saints on a Wienerschnitzel project created by Innocean.
“We believe that our dual studio strategy positions us uniquely in the competitive landscape of food and beverage storytelling,” said Heller. “By blending the artistry of the New York studio with the flexibility of our Los Angeles location, we can tailor our productions to meet the unique demands of each project, regardless of geography.”
“Working with Sinners and Saints in the demanding field of tabletop was an absolute pleasure,” shared Apple Pie Tabletop in a joint statement. “Warm welcome, unwavering support and dedication--everything a director can ask for. The entire experience was both enjoyable and rewarding. We will not miss an opportunity to collaborate with them again.”
“The first thing you notice is that Apple Pie has beautiful work,” Heller observed. “Having worked with them, I can say that Gene and Alisa are extremely meticulous and detail-oriented; their combination of talent and agility appeals to agencies and clients.” Also appealing to Heller is Apple Pie Tabletop’s brisk international...
