SAG-AFTRA’s National Board of Directors has voted unanimously to ask its full membership for a strike authorization should an agreement not be reached between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on a new film/TV contract.
Gabrielle Carteris, SAG-AFTRA president and chair of the TV/theatrical negotiating committee, and David White, national executive director and chief negotiator, sent out a notice on Sunday (6/25) to union rank and file, seeking a strike authorization in light of what they characterized as AMPTP’s call for “outrageous rollbacks that cut to the core of our basic terms and conditions. Despite our efforts, the AMPTP has failed to make sufficient progress on our most critical issues. The status quo is simply unacceptable and our members, standing together, will not give in to management’s onerous demands nor back down on our critical proposals.”
The SAG-AFTRA communique went on to explain that “a strike authorization is not a strike. It is a powerful tool that authorizes your negotiators to call a strike if they are unable to secure a fair deal.”
The current film/primetime TV contract expires on June 30.
