Riot, the Santa Monica-based post/visual effects shop, has expanded its telecine department, hiring colorists Beau Leon, Clark Muller and Robert Curreri, and promoting Darby Walker to executive producer, telecine services. The personnel changes follow a yearlong expansion of Riot’s resources that included the addition of a Cintel C-Reality and a Spirit Datacine high definition telecine. Leon, Muller and Curreri join a telecine roster that also includes colorists Bob Festa and Mark Wilkins.
Walker has worked in postproduction for nine years. She has been with Riot since it opened four years ago (as Encore Santa Monica), and formerly served as a producer in the telecine department. Walker will now hold direct supervisory responsibility for that department, including overseeing client relations, sales and marketing, scheduling and operations. "She knows the facility business thoroughly and has a special talent for the management requirements of her new role," said Riot managing director Richard Cormier.
Leon’s arrival marks his return to Riot following a year at Post Logic, Hollywood. In addition to being established in commercials and music videos, he is also an accomplished fine artist and musician. Leon began his career transferring film for episodic television before finding an industry niche in spots and clips. Among his early endeavors was the R.E.M. video for "Losing My Religion." Additional credits include "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" for Smashing Pumpkins; "Take a Bow" for Madonna; and "Crash Into Me" for The Dave Matthews Band. In recent years, Leon has diversified into commercials, his latest spots being for Wendy’s and Bally’s Total Fitness.
Muller brings a similar level of accomplishment to Riot, but from an international background. He began his career in London at Universal Film and Video. He later spent time at London houses Visions and Complete Video, where he contributed to some of Britain’s edgiest music videos and commercials, and worked with directors such as Simon West (now of bicoastal/ international Propaganda Films) and the Douglas Brothers (now of bicoastal Satellite).
Since arriving in the U.S. in ’97, Muller has developed working relationships with such spot helmers as Luke Scott of bicoastal RSA USA and Dayton/Faris of bicoastal Bob Industries. Muller’s recent commercial work includes campaigns for The Gap, Pennzoil and Bosch, and as his first project for Riot, a new national campaign for Infiniti. Prior to Riot, Muller was with 525 Studios, Santa Monica.
A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, Curreri began his career at DuArt Film Labs in New York and also spent time at The Tape House, New York. Curreri’s prior post was at The Image Group, New York, where his workload included commercial projects and music videos for such artists as P.J. Harvey, Tricky and Morcheeba. Among his spot credits are campaigns for Powerade and insurance company AFLAC, as well as extensive work on promos for MTV, VH1 and the A&E Network.
