one more profoundly meaningful than the other—will come together in November. The New Directors Charity Group is staging, with sponsor support, its second annual benefit for Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles.
The New Directors Charity Group was formed in Oct. ’98 as a nonprofit organization with two chartered goals: to help new directors and cinematographers gain exposure in the industry through screening events; and to raise money for various children’s charities through those events. Last December, the then fledgling group held its first fundraiser. More than 200 guests donated money and plush toys to enjoy an evening of food, drink and entertainment. That event—which featured the work of 15 spot and music video newcomers, mostly directors with a smattering of cinematographers—generated more than $10,000 and 200-plus toys for the Children’s Hospital. The showcase also resulted in several directors being signed by production houses, one of the helmers being the New Directors Charity Group’s founder, Zac Hartog, who joined Sound & Vision Films, a Westwood, Calif.-based commercial/music video house.
This year, the New Directors Charity Group has set its sights higher, offering sponsorship pack-ages (from $1,000 to $5,000), generating support from more production companies, establishing ticket prices (as compared to last year’s guest-determined donation at the door) and hiking competition entry fees ($150 for the first entry, $50 for each additional entry). Hartog’s goal for the event is to raise $150,000 for the Children’s Hospital.
Judges from the commercial community were at press time screening reels and judging work on a point scale. Entries that receive a score of seven or higher will be shown during the gala event, which is slated for Thursday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.-midnight, at the Nick On Sunset Studios in Hollywood.
During the event, celebrity judges will assign point scores to the screened entries. The top 10 entries will receive a New Directors Cine Award. All the other work to make the evening’s screening will receive a smaller finalist trophy.
Additionally, these new entries will be compared with some of the great commercials of yesteryear as compiled by TV Land, the Nickelodeon sister cable network that shows TV series mostly from the ’60s and ’70s. TV Land is a co-host and sponsor of the New Directors Charity Group event, as is Celebrity Connection, an L.A. company that secures famous people, including TV stars from years past, for entertainment industry affairs and media projects. Plans call for the celebrity judges to be from some of television’s classic sitcoms, including those shown on TV Land.
Hartog hopes the retro reel and feel will help to drum up attendance. He noted that assorted spot production houses are involved on one or more levels, including entering work into the competition, buying sponsorship packages and offering other support services. One shop, he said, has volunteered to pay entry fees for several students at Pasadena-based Art Center College of Design who couldn’t otherwise easily afford the cost of entering worthwhile pieces of work.
Hartog said participating commercial production companies include Gartner, Cucoloris Films, Tate & Partners, Atlas Pictures, JGF, HSI Productions and Barking Weasel Productions.
Children’s Hospital, which cares for nearly 200,000 patients annually, maintains such operations as a pediatric research institute; The Heart Institute, which performs heart and lung transplants on children ranging from newborns to 18 years of age; The Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases; and The Children’s AIDS Center. Earlier this year, The Children’s AIDS Center launched a gene therapy treatment program for HIV-infected children, which resulted in the first re-engineered stem cell transfusion performed in the U.S. on an HIV-stricken youngster.
