The full agenda for SHOOT‘s two-pronged event that can help get attendees “plugged into the future”–the daytime Directors/Producers Forum, and the evening’s 9th annual New Directors showcase on Tuesday, May 10, at the DGA Theatre in New York City–has been set with a lineup of notables from different sectors of the business who will offer varied perspectives and informed takes on key issues as well as on creative and business aspects of the industry. The day and evening sessions will provide the opportunity to meet up-and-coming directors, mingle with industry friends and make new contacts. Directors, cinematographers, production company executives, ad agency creatives & producers, brand marketers and other members of the commercial, TV and film production and post communities will be in attendance.
Here’s a preview of what’s on tap, first for the Directors/Producers Forum from 9:30am-4:15pm, which will feature a series of panel discussions and Q&A sessions featuring leading directors, agency creatives, production company entrepreneurs, and other top-drawer artists and executives who will share their expertise. The schedule breaks down as follows:
—9:30-9:50am Attendees check in at the DGA Theatre
—10am Welcome Remarks
–10:15-11:05am Entering Another Dimension
While 3D has become a force in cinema, it’s only just starting to make inroads into the consumer/home entertainment world but the long-range implications of that encroachment should carry substantive weight in the advertising/marketing sector. Should companies be preparing for this possibility? What have leading houses done thus far? Technology is also making 3D viable in special venue, out-of-home experiences–we’ll examine that arena as well. Panelists address 3D prospects and how much of a priority it should be for the ad industry. Plus see some cutting edge, thought-provoking 3D work.

What new breeds of production house have hit the scene and what is the thinking behind how they’re structured? What does the entrance of traditional talent agencies and entertainment companies into the marketing sector mean for marketers and traditional commercial production suppliers? We’ll canvas such issues and compare hybrids vs. specialty houses, in-house resources vs. and/or complemented by partnerships, a work-for-hire model vs. content equity. Get a more well-defined sense of how production companies are fine-tuning their businesses and offerings so as to attain the best niche for themselves and their company.

–2:30pm-3:15pm Social Advocacy: Sponsored Content
Many are grappling with the business model for sponsored content, how to leverage and monetize it properly. But at times lost in the shuffle is the power of such content to do good and contribute to the betterment of our society. In this session we examine the anatomy of NBC’s Child Hunger Ends Here, a program that brought together Al Roker Entertainment, NBC, Feeding America and ConAgra Foods. During the airing of the program, ConAgra commercials ran that were directed by Joe Pytka. How does a project get packaged to raise not only public awareness of an issue but also funds to help solve a profound societal problem? Hear from Al Roker and others involved in the process and see what lessons are to be learned that can be applied to the sponsored content world.

Turning the Tables: Q&A with director Danny Levinson
You likely know Danny Levinson as a noted director as well as the president of a leading production house, Moxie Pictures. But as of late, he’s added the calling card of interviewer/host via his audio podcast, Moxie Radio, which launched earlier this year on iTunes. In the bimonthly podcast, Levinson engages high profile guests from the filmmaking world in casual yet thoughtful conversations on varied topics.
Well this time we turn the tables and Levinson is the guest, interviewed by SHOOT editor Bob Goldrich. We’ll talk about his career, the business model for Moxie Pictures, how he and the company have adapted to a changing industry landscape, its infusion of feature filmmakers (including Wes Anderson, Cameron Crowe, Jim Sheridan, Kevin Smith and John Waters), and its production of such long-form feature fare as director Errol Morris’ latest documentary Tabloid. As a director and executive, Levinson brings both creative and business perspectives to the table.
Plus, you’ll get the chance to “interview” Levinson as he will field questions from the audience. Gain insights into commercialmaking, branded content, political messaging, talent management and developing directorial careers.
On the latter front, we’ll also visit briefly with director Lena Beug who’s on the Moxie roster. She first gained widespread industry recognition when she earned inclusion into SHOOT‘s 2006 New Directors Showcase.
