SHORT CUTS
Ohio Edit, New York, cut a pair of MasterCard spots featuring the hopeful fans of two unlucky baseball franchises: the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Created by New York agency McCann-Erickson, the :30s "Red Sox Hope for the World Series" and "Cubs Hope for the World Series" focus on fans relating what they would give up for their respective team’s World Series tickets, which of course, would be "priceless." Peter Gilbert of Santa Monica-based nonfiction spots and longform helmed "Cubs," while Jessica Yu directed "Red Sox." Ohio Edit’s Frank Snider cut the spots, with Pete Fritz and Ed Coleman serving as assistant editors.
Santa Monica-based Lux cut two spots for Campbell-Ewald Advertising, Warren, Mich., and its client Carrier Corporation. The :30s "Cooling Expert" and "Heating Expert" were edited by Lux’s Rick Lobo, with Jay Rogers as assistant editor. Lux also handled the visual effects and finishing for the spots, with Josh Kirschenbaum as the Flame compositor and Rogers as the online editor. Tatiana Derovanessian was executive producer on the project. Neil Tardio Jr. directed the commercial via bicoastal Go Film.
MUSIC NOTES
Ant Music, New York, created the music for Lorillard’s "Repeat Repeat," via Lowe Worldwide, New York. The ad, directed by Errol Morris of bicoastal/international @radical.media, encourages interaction between parents and children about the subject of smoking. The campaign restates the ethos of open communication and is supported by a new-look Web site that offers tools and tips on how to deal with the issue. Ant Music’s creative director, Anthony Vanger, was asked to create a warm, musical and repetitive motif for the spots that tied in with the creative concept that there are some things parents cannot repeat too many times. The result was a reggae-lilted theme composed by Ant Music’s Adam Plack. Chuck Kinsinger was executive music producer for Ant.
David Horowitz Music Associates (DHMA), New York, arranged the track for GE’s "Water Music," a spot directed by Joe Pytka of PYTKA, Venice, Calif. Created by BBDO New York, the :30 takes place on stage at a theater where a string quartet of CG water figures—created by Digital Domain, Venice—perform Handel’s "Air." The lead violinist suddenly begins playing erratic notes because he has debris floating in his arm. Another violinist comes to the rescue and scoops out the gunk as the voiceover extols the virtues of GE’s water purification system. The spot ends with the familiar "Imagination at work" tag. David Horowitz was the arranger, with Jan Horowitz as producer. Joe Sears engineered the spot for DHMA.
Crescendo! Studios senior engineer Jay Shilliday recently worked with Euro RSCG, San Francisco, to mix the :30s "Slide" and "Rice." Engineer Craig Helmholz mixed a campaign of new Taco Bell ads for San Francisco agency Foote Cone & Belding. The package included "Block Party" (:30) and "Block Party Jr." (:15). Helmholz also recorded and mixed the :30s "Curious," "Express" and "Peace" for Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco, and its client 24 Hour Fitness. Another Helmholz project was the recording of actress Allison Mack for the 3-D
animated feature The Ant Bully, which is currently in production through DNA Productions, Irving, Texas. Based on the book of the same name, the film tells a story about a boy named Lucas and the lesson he learns about bullying when he is pulled into an ant hole he has been tormenting. And engineer Dave Baker mixed a campaign for Mervyn’s via Venables, Bell & Partners, San Francisco. The spots are titled "Bargain Hunters/Drop Everything," "Bargain Hunters/Drop Everything Sale" (:15s) and "Lowest Prices of the Year" (:15 with a :10 lift). Crescendo! Studios is based in San Francisco.
