SHORT CUTS
San Francisco-based One Six Eight Design Group redesigned the on-air graphic for Dateline, NBC’s news magazine show. Building from existing bumpers, One Six Eight created a 3-D space comprised of sleek panels filled with rushes of light that represent Dateline‘s news information. One Six Eight collaborated with Computer Cafe, Santa Maria, Calif., to bring the graphic to life. Credits for One Six Eight include creative director Brad Soderlund and executive producer Jan Phillips. For Computer Cafe, David Ebner was animation supervisor, Akira Orikasa and Jeff Goldman were lead animators, and Vicki Weimer was producer.
Remedy, the New York-headquartered creative solutions studio, has produced and, in collaboration with PBS, conceptualized "Backstage," a :30 promoting Ken Burns’ 10-episode documentary series Jazz. Remedy created a seamless instrumental build, from the intimate moments of the backstage tune-up to a live performance, for the ad-as well as a package of promotional elements and a theatrical trailer. Burns’ series incorporates archival images, audio, video and text illuminating the lives and legacies of jazz greats, including Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Billie Holiday. Remedy credits include senior VP/executive creative director Paul Newman, executive producer Stephen Kinney, director/designer Anders Hallgren, head of production/senior producer Simone Barker and DP Lana Bernberg.
Spontaneous Combustion, New York, created and executed the design for a six-minute movie billboard/videowall screened in the Hewlett-Packard Company (H-P) booth at COMDEX/Fall 2000, the global IT marketplace. Conceptualized by H-P’s agency Stone Yamashita, San Francisco, and Kaleidoscope Productions, New York, the videowall focused on images that shuffle a dozen times in a slot machine-like format. Screened on 16 panels, arranged four over four, which hung in the booth, 12 looped vignettes gave viewers a peek into what’s going on at H-P. Set against a white background, clean graphic "chicklets" containing either typography or footage of H-P’s applications in the world marketplace shuffled horizontally or vertically on screen until they united. For Spontaneous, Tony Robins was executive creative director/Inferno and Flame artist, Marc Schwartz was executive producer, Pat Portello was Inferno/Flame artist, DeDe Sullivan was producer, Tricia Chatterton was assistant producer, and Dana Yee was designer. The live action was directed by Kaleidoscope’s David Poremba.
