Pink Noise, a music/sound design/audio post shop in New York, has promoted Stephen Shirk to executive producer/designer. (Pink Noise prefers the title "designer" for its staff sound designers). Shirk succeeds former Pink Noise executive producer Frank DiMinno, who departed the studio in October 1999 to head up Wildvine Music, New York.
"I am very pleased to be able to promote from within [for that position]," stated Michael Maxwell, Pink Noise’s creative director/owner. Shirk had been chief engineer/mixer/designer since joining Pink Noise in ’99.
Wearing his new hat, Shirk has already executive produced the U.S. Army Reserves’ "Army.U" via Impiric, the direct marketing division of Young & Rubicam, New York; and Northwestern Mutual’s "Kids," "Kick Boxer" and "Tennis" via J. Walter Thompson, Chicago.
Pink Noise’s roster also establishes three additional designers: Bryan Klumpp, formerly freelancing as a sound designer; Jesse Atlas, who rejoins the studio after a five-month hiatus as freelance stage director/actor; and Chris Otchy, recently promoted from studio assistant.
Before going freelance in November ’99, Klumpp spent two years as resident sound designer at editorial house Jump, New York. While there, his credits included sound design on spots for AT&T, American Express, Blockbuster and Dr Pepper.
Before Jump, Klumpp spent six years at now defunct post house Dennis Hayes & Associates (DH&A), where he first met Maxwell. In ’91 as chief engineer at the facility, Maxwell hired Klumpp to be assistant sound designer. They collaborated on spots together until DH&A closed in ’97. (Pink Noise began in ’93 as a division of DH&A. Maxwell, who headed the division while it was under DH&A’s wing, became Pink Noise’s sole owner in ’97.) At Pink Noise, Klumpp has already sound designed the aforementioned U.S. Army Reserves spot, as well as playj’s "liberation" via bicoastal RSA USA.
Atlas said he decided to go freelance in March "to experiment with acting and directing." During that time, he directed and sound designed the play White Meat, produced Off-Off-Broadway. He also sound designed When Words Fail, an Off-Broadway play. Atlas graduated in ’99 with a B.A. in theatre from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., before joining Pink Noise late in the year as a designer. He is credited at the shop with In Demand’s "King" via Amster Yard, New York.
Otchy had been a studio assistant for a year before his promotion. "It wasn’t a big jump," he said, because he’d been freelancing as a sound designer, not only while at Pink Noise, but for two years prior. His credits include sound design for the short film Caffeination, directed by Josh Levine; and the play Runaway, produced Off-Off Broadway.
Pink Noise has also added two assistant designers to its roster: John McFaul and Brian Trim. Maxwell and Shirk serve as Pink Noise’s national reps.
