SHOOT‘s New Directors Showcase celebrates its 11th year on the evening of Thursday, May 23, at the DGA Theatre in New York City, highlighted by the introduction of a 2013 roster consisting of 35 up-and-coming directors–27 individual helmers and four duos.
At the other end of the filmmaking continuum are several accomplished, lauded directors who will be front and center at SHOOT‘s counterpart daytime event, the Directors/Producers Forum, also on May 23 at the DGA Theatre. These filmmakers include: Joe Berlinger, a Best Feature Documentary Oscar nominee (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory) and two-time Emmy winner (with a total of seven career Emmy nominations); Henry-Alex Rubin, also Academy Award-nominated for a feature documentary (Murderball); Cynthia Wade, a Short Subject Documentary Oscar winner (for Freeheld) and again nominated in that same category this year (for Mondays at Racine); Matthew O’Neill, who teamed with Jon Alpert to direct Redemption, nominated for a 2013 Short Subject documentary Academy Award ; and Bryan Buckley whose Asad was also a Best Live-Action Short Oscar nominee in 2013.
Wade and O’Neill will kick off the Forum with a morning “Screening Room” during which we will show excerpts from Mondays at Racine and Redemption. The directors will provide backstory on the respective films while also discussing their diversification into commercialmaking.
Capping the Forum will be two separate afternoon “In The Director’s Chair” sessions–the first with documentarian/commercialmaker Henry-Alex Rubin whose fiction feature film debut, Disconnect, was recently released nationwide. He will chat about how he brought his documentary sensibilities to bear on Disconnnect, which stars Jason Bateman, and reflect on his ongoing spotmaking career at Smuggler.
This will be followed by an “In The Director’s Chair” discussion with Joe Berlinger whose documentary work continues to be insightful, game changing and acclaimed. Last year 2012 saw him earn his first Oscar nomination (for Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory) as well as three Emmy nominations (two for Paradise Lost 3, one for Paul Simon’s Graceland Journey: Under African Skies). These were his fifth, sixth and seventh Emmy noms, which include two wins–for Ten Days That Unexpectedly Changed America and Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills. Berlinger will also discuss his continuing involvement in the meshing of advertising, entertainment and documentary filmmaking with a body of work via @radical.media that includes the Sundance Channel’s Iconoclasts, the Power of Dreams documentary series for Honda, and an ambitious Cadillac campaign out of Fallon, Minneapolis.
Sandwiched in-between these director-driven sessions will be three Forum panel discussions and lunch. An early afternoon panel will feature director Bryan Buckley as he shares the path of his short film Asad which went from its debut at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival to earning an Oscar nomination. His reflections will be part of a discussion exploring the strategic underpinnings of elevating project awareness, helping worthwhile work to get seen and recognized. Moderated by Gerald Giannone, SHOOT co-owner and founder of the SHOOT Publicity Wire, this panel discussion will also feature insights from Bladimiar Norman, sr. VP marketing, The Weinstein Co., and Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, co-directors, producers of Sexy Baby.
Morning and midday panels are Fresh Produce, and The Visual Flow, respectively. The former will look at content forms that are emerging as the advertising and entertainment communities come together in different ways. Among the panelists is Matt Bonin, chief production officer of Ogilvy & Mather, Kristen Finch, director of digital production at Grey NY, Rebecca Skinner, executive producer/managing director of HSI, and Hafeez M. Saheed, head of production/executive producer at Nickelodeon Creative Advertising. Also featured in the conversation are legal context from advertising/entertainment industry attorney Jeffrey A. Greenbaum of FKKS, and a video library/resource perspective provided by Ross Drabow of T3 Media.
Our midday Visual Flow session will delve into workflow concerns and issues stemming from the growing prominence of digital cinematography. The discussion will feature expertise from such panelists as cinematographer Steven Poster, ASC, president of the International Cinematographers Guild’ director/producer James Stewart, a pioneering voice in 3D; colorist Billy Gabor of Company 3; Lynn Gustafson who is rental manager of ARRI CSC; and Michael Cioni, CEO and founder of post house Light Iron.
The Forum will provide a learning and networking opportunity for directors, producers, cinematographers, ad agency creatives/producers, feature & independent film, TV & cable executives, production & post company executives and artisans.
2013 marks the ninth year that the SHOOT New Directors Showcase event will be held at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Theatre on West 57th Street in New York City. Both the daytime Directors/Producers Forum agenda and the New Directors Showcase evening program combine to provide an ideal environment for filmmakers, commercialmakers and production and post executives and artisans involved in all types of content creation to capitalize on new business opportunities, share expertise, meet new project partners, initiate creative collaboration, source new possibilities for work and help define opportunities in an evolving marketplace now clearly spanning advertising and entertainment (and the merging of those two worlds).
