During last week’s New York City Council meeting (7/27), Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone introduced a resolution calling for a "fair and equitable" settlement of the actors’ strike against the advertising industry. While that language in and of itself would elicit widespread support, the resolution paradoxically also carries a pair of controversial "what-if?" provisos that have generated strong statements of advocacy as well as opposition.
Vallone went on to propose that if the strike isn’t resolved soon, "the Mayor should consider prohibiting the use of City-owned property and resources in the production of radio and television commercials" being struck against by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). Vallone would also further "direct the Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting to provide public access to film permits issued on a daily basis … "
