Avion Satellite To Rep Several MJZ Directors.
By KATHY DeSALVO
NewNew films, a satellite of Toronto-based Avion Film Productions has opened under the aegis of executive producer Teri Walderman, who formerly spent six years at The Directors Film Company, Toronto.
Based out of Avion’s offices, NewNew films will provide exclusive Canadian representation for seven directors affiliated in the U.S with L.A.-based Morton Jankel Zander (MJZ). They are directors Rocky Morton, Annabel Jankel (both of whom are MJZ principals), Irv Blitz, Sean Thonson, Kieran Walsh, Robert Richardson and Jamie Caliri; all were formerly associated with The Directors Film Company in Canada. As well, NewNew has signed director Eric Bute, who is repped stateside by bicoastal Villains.
The remaining MJZ roster of directors—Tom DeCerchio, Victor Garcia and Geoffrey Barish (who works through MJZ satellite Seven Ounce Man, Los Angeles)—continue to be affiliated with Toronto-based Radke Films for Canadian projects.
Walderman related that after she left The Directors Film Co. in mid-August, Avion president Michael Schwartz, a longtime friend, called her about heading up a satellite company. "I thought about it, and on September seventh, we started the company with no directors and nobody in mind. Then, when I spoke with David [Zander, principal/executive producer at MJZ], he decided to come along. I have a great relationship with David and with Annabel [Jankel]."
Walderman intends for NewNew films to remain a small company with a manageable roster of directors for Canadian representation. She is talking to both Canadian- and U.S.-based companies and directors. For now, she will handle sales duties herself and will draw upon Avion’s resources and support.
"I just want this to be a small company," explained Walderman, "where directors don’t compete against directors in the same company, where everybody works as a team, and we’re all together having a great time. We miss the fun sometimes."
The company’s moniker, according to Walderman, is drawn from a story she heard involving a creative director and a copywriter at an undisclosed, large New York-based agency. After the creative director rejected a script the copywriter submitted, the copywriter protested that the idea was fresh and new. "The creative director looked at him," related Walderman, "and said, ‘I didn’t ask for new. I asked for the new new.’"
