The famed Universal Studios Lot has been undergoing ongoing multi-year construction and expansion. But in the bigger picture, this growth--ambitious in and of itself in Los Angeles--also extends beyond Southern California geography with resources and services being developed and mobilized in other centers as well. Jeff Stone, president and general manager of Universal Studios Operations, provided a handle on the growing infrastructure on and outside the main lot, shedding light on key dynamics behind the expansion including sustainability, a blurring of lines between interiors and the outdoors, and a deep concern--reflected in approaches to design and architecture--for the well-being of people as an environment has been fashioned for them that nurtures creativity and collaboration. Stone outlined recent developments on the lot, including the opening this past spring of the new Employee Commons with upgraded dining facilities including made-to-order food stations for salads, tacos, pizzas, global cuisine and more--plus the Peacock Grill fine dining restaurant, three screening theaters, and a 4,500 square foot Event Center with a view to the Hollywood Hills. In September, the One Universal office building debuted with 350,000 square feet of space over 11 stories looking out toward the San Gabriel Mountains. “The overall design,” related Stone, “blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor experiences inspired by contemporary design.
