"Surreal Trio" examines how the tracks for the top three ads on the chart were created. The triumvirate of spots-for the likes of Sony PlayStation, the Sony Wega digital TV set, and Qwest Communications-has one thing in common: all present dreamy, otherworldly images to sell their respective products.
In recent months, several high-profile commercials have featured soundtracks of existing music from popular recording artists. SubZero, Santa Monica, a new satellite of Hum Music+Sound Design, Santa Monica, seeks get established recording stars to create original music for spots. "Bridging The Gap" looks at this new venture. The firm has already engineered one such deal: "Leave It On The Floor," a new ad for Gatorade out of FCB Chicago, with an original tune by LL Cool J.
Many ad agencies have music producers on staff, who helps creatives find just the find music and/or sound design track for a particular spot. Leo Bunett USA, Chicago, has gone a step further, establishing Music Aid, under the aegis of composer Ira Antelis. The new arm of the ad shop can create music for Burnett ads, or find music companies that can. "In-House Aid" presents a look at the new music entity.
