Simpson: American Crime Story” (FX) and “UnREAL” (Lifetime) are in the running for the Program of the Year honor from the Television Critics Association (TCA), a media organization with more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists from the U.S. and Canada. The 2016 TCA Awards recognize outstanding television programming in the 2015-16 season, honoring actors, producers and programs in a variety of categories including News and Information, Youth, Reality, Drama and Comedy. This year’s event takes place Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as part of the group’s biannual industry conference, the summer press tour. Jaime Camil, the popular star of the Golden Globe-winning CW comedy series “Jane The Virgin” will serve as host.
This year’s nominations are spread across five broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW—as well as PBS, 12 cable networks and internet streaming service Netflix. HBO leads with 12 nominations; FX/FXX has 11; Netflix has six; PBS has five; USA has four; ABC, AMC, CBS, Lifetime, and The CW each received three; Disney Junior, NBC and TBS each have two; and CNN, E!, Fox, History, Showtime and WGN America finish with one.
This year’s roster of notable nominees includes “All The Way” star, 2009 TCA Award winner and former TCA Host Bryan Cranston, two-time TCA nominee “Fresh Off The Boat” star Constance Wu, comedy standout Aziz Ansari, and 2016 Golden Globe winner Rachel Bloom.
The lineup also features a fresh batch of first-time nominees including USA’s drama-thriller “Mr. Robot”; FXX’s quirky rom-com “You’re the Worst”; CW’s comedy-musical “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”; Lifetime’s drama “UnREAL”; WGN America’s period-piece “Underground”; CNN’s doc series “United Shades of America”; and E!’s groundbreaking transgender reality series “I Am Cait.”
“TCA members have recognized a record number of first-time nominees for this year’s awards. In our 32-year history this is one of the most diverse slates of genres and programs we’ve ever had,” said TCA president Amber Dowling. “It’s been a banner year for fresh, noteworthy content and we’re looking forward to seeing which shows and actors grab top prizes following the difficult votes ahead.”
The TCA Awards will also bestow a special Heritage Award trophy to one long-standing program that has had a major cultural or social impact. This year’s nominees include the late comedian Garry Shandling’s talk show satire “The Larry Sanders Show”; the revolutionary comedy “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”; one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time, “Seinfeld”; Gene Roddenberry’s influential sci-fi saga “Star Trek”; and the mind-bending small town murder mystery “Twin Peaks,” co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost.
In addition to honoring this year’s best, the TCA presents a Career Achievement Award to an individual who has influenced the medium, which will be announced at the awards presentation.
The Summer TCA Press Tour will be held Wed., July 27 through Thurs., Aug. 11.

After 20 Years of Acting, Megan Park Finds Her Groove In The Director’s Chair On “My Old Ass”
Megan Park feels a little bad that her movie is making so many people cry. It's not just a single tear either — more like full body sobs.
She didn't set out to make a tearjerker with "My Old Ass," now streaming on Prime Video. She just wanted to tell a story about a young woman in conversation with her older self. The film is quite funny (the dialogue between 18-year-old and almost 40-year-old Elliott happens because of a mushroom trip that includes a Justin Bieber cover), but it packs an emotional punch, too.
Writing, Park said, is often her way of working through things. When she put pen to paper on "My Old Ass," she was a new mom and staying in her childhood bedroom during the pandemic. One night, she and her whole nuclear family slept under the same roof. She didn't know it then, but it would be the last time, and she started wondering what it would be like to have known that.
In the film, older Elliott ( Aubrey Plaza ) advises younger Elliott ( Maisy Stella ) to not be so eager to leave her provincial town, her younger brothers and her parents and to slow down and appreciate things as they are. She also tells her to stay away from a guy named Chad who she meets the next day and discovers that, unfortunately, he's quite cute.
At 38, Park is just getting started as a filmmaker. Her first, "The Fallout," in which Jenna Ortega plays a teen in the aftermath of a school shooting, had one of those pandemic releases that didn't even feel real. But it did get the attention of Margot Robbie 's production company LuckyChap Entertainment, who reached out to Park to see what other ideas she had brewing.
"They were very instrumental in encouraging me to go with it," Park said. "They're just really even-keeled, good people, which makes... Read More
