Lisa Hinman, president of San Francisco-based Phoenix Edit.Effects.Design, a company that she founded in ’91, has been named president of the Association of Independent Creative Editors (AICE) for a two-year term, beginning Jan. 1. She will succeed Richard Gillespie, owner/editor of Fast Cut Edits, Dallas. Rounding out the newly elected national board of officers are VP Tom Duff, president of Optimus in Chicago and Santa Monica; secretary David Rosen, executive VP of New York-based Blue Rock; and treasurer Mitch Garelick, a New York-based post industry vet.
“One main goal is to continue to increase the awareness of the contributions and importance of the independent creative editor to advertisers and their ad agencies,” Hinman related. “The ‘Who is your editor?’ question is as important as ‘Who is your director?’ The more our clients understand the editorial process, the better they will understand that.
“To that end, we intend to play a bigger role in providing educational opportunities and white papers to them,” she added, noting that topics may include subjects such as high definition post.
Hinman also addressed the topic of in-house editorial. “There is a place for this kind of thing that can be efficient for things like test spots and account presentations,” she said. “There’s currently movement for some agencies — to create profit centers by their holding companies so they invest in editing equipment and use staffers to edit full up spots.
“I don’t think that will last as it doesn’t serve the client in producing the best product possible,” Hinman opined. “There will also be competition within the free market system that produces the best creative and drives the pursuit of excellence. We feel AICE represents the best editors in our industry. The organization wishes to support them in their pursuit of excellence.”
AICE is also looking to continue growth both domestically and internationally. Hinman related that this past year, the organization launched a chapter in Toronto, and is currently talking with editors in London.
Hinman also reported that AICE plans to move its membership directory online to make it more accessible to clients. As well, AICE is looking to redesign its Web site next year.
Meanwhile, the 2006 agenda includes the annual AICE Awards, which is scheduled for May 8, 2006 in Los Angeles.
The ’06 AICE National board is rounded out by Dallas chapter members Tom Acito of Red Car and James Appleton of Mad River Post; Boston chapter members Peter Barstis of Editbar and Ellen Boldis of Panache; Los Angeles chapter members Yvette Cobarrubias of Cosmo Street and Therese Hunsberger of Filmcore; San Francisco chapter member Jon Ettinger of FilmCore; Detroit chapter members Stewart Shevin of Mad River Post and Terry King of STS Editorial; Chicago member Tim McGuire of Cutters; Toronto-based Mary Beth Odell of Flashcut and Sarah Brooks of School; and Minneapolis-based Tony Fischer of Fischer Edit and Steve Shepard of Spotnik.
CHAPTER CHANGES
With her new role as national president, Hinman vacates her role as San Francisco’s AICE chapter president. The new chapter president is aforementioned national board member Ettinger, who also served a term as chapter president in ’01-’03.
The new officers of the local board, all of whom begin a two-year term next month, are rounded out by VP Greg Martinez of Teak, secretary Janie Ford of Mad River Post, and treasurer Jonathan Hinman of Phoenix.
“We have a really small, tight chapter,” said Ettinger. “In the past we’ve been able to get together on issues and reach a genuine consensus and help each other….I am looking forward to continuing this with good open lines of communication between ourselves, and our clients as well.”
Meanwhile, the AICE New York chapter has elected 89 executive producer Bob Cagliero to served a two-year term as chapter president, succeeding aforementioned Bernadette Quinn. Both will serve on the national board of directors.
Cagliero brings agency, production and post experience to his new role. He has held his current post at 89 for the past five years, and before that was a senior producer at Ogilvy & Mather, New York. Earlier he was a line producer at various New York-based production companies, including his former East West Films.
The New York AICE board officers are rounded out by the aforementioned Garelick as treasurer, Rosen as secretary, and VP David Friedman of DJM.
“The New York chapter board is comprised of so many talented and passionate people; we work so well together,” Cagliero said. “No matter the issue, we seem to arrive at a smart consensus. I want to maintain this dynamic as president.”
“I will also continue to support the mission of AICE in building a strong relationship with advertisers and ad agencies,” he said.
