Fittingly on a night when Ang Lee received the Visual Effects Society’s Visionary Award, his movie Life of Pi was the big winner at the VES Awards competition, topping four categories, including the marquee honor for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture. Life of Pi also won for Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in a Live-Action Feature Motion Picture (Storm of God sequence), Outstanding Animated Character in a Live-Action Feature (Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger), and Outstanding Compositing in a Feature (for Storm of God).
The only category in which Life of Pi was nominated and did not win was for Outstanding Created Environment in a Live-Action Feature. The Avengers topped that category for its Midtown Manhattan environ.
Nine-time Oscar winner Dennis Muren, a lauded VFX artisan at ILM, presented the Visionary Award to Lee. The two had worked together on Hulk. Lee said it was particularly meaningful to receive the VES honor from “the master” who introduced him to the big-scale, ambitious world of visual effects.
Lee affirmed that the VES community is not visual effects but rather “visual art.” He added, “You are not technicians, you guys are artists.”
The director went on to thank the artists who helped bring Life of Pi to fruition, including the film’s visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer of Rhythm+Hues. “You’re a great filmmaker,” said Lee to Westenhofer who was seated in the audience. “We made this movie together.”
Lee also acknowledged another audience member, Erik-Jan De Boer, leader of the Rhythm+Hues character animation team, for his contributions to Life of Pi. “I am so glad your Tiger got the award today,” said Lee, referring to the Bengal tiger character named Richard Parker which earned the VES Award for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live-Action Feature.
Additionally MPC got some love from Lee who praised the studio’s work on the storm at sea sequences in Life of Pi; the Storm of God scenes won the VES Award for Outstanding Compositing.
Lifetime Achievement
Lee wasn’t the evening’s only special VES Award winner. Richard Edlund won the VES Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Harrison Ford; the two first worked together on Star Wars.
Edlund is a four-time Oscar winner (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi).
Edlund made his initial major career mark at ILM, went on to found Boss Film Studios and now is teamed with fellow VFX supervisor Helena Packer in duMonde VFX LLC, an effects studio currently working on Planet of the Apes 2.
Brave showing
Brave was the other big feature winner at VES, on the animation side of the competition. Brave won in every category in which it was nominated: Outstanding Animation in An Animated Feature; Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature (Merida); Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in an Animated Feature; and Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature (the Forest).
Another major feature category winner was The Impossible for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects.
Spot win
The marquee ad category winner–for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Commercial–was Nike’s “Biomorph” with Digital Domain serving as its VFX studio. Last year “Biomorph” earned director David Rosenbaum of Mothership, a sister shop to Digital Domain, inclusion in the SHOOT New Directors Showcase.
