Pacific Data Images (PDI), the Palo Alto-based computer animation/visual effects studio behind the CGI feature film Antz, has hired Arnauld Lamorlette, formerly of Buf Compagnie, Paris. Lamorlette has been named a senior visual effects developer on Shrek, PDI’s second CGI animation theatrical feature made under an exclusive co-production agreement with DreamWorks SKG. DreamWorks owns 40% of PDI.
"Arnauld will be a major contributor in the technical visual development of Shrek," said Aron Warner, Shrek producer. "He has been brought on to PDI’s team to oversee the creation of computer-generated human characters and the rich organic world they will inhabit in Shrek. Arnauld will be instrumental in developing new animation systems and unique technical applications."
Lamorlette, 34, was most recently VP and director of research and development at Buf, a recognized European leader in the production of computer-generated special effects. As vice president, Lamorlette was involved in the production of all the company’s film projects including The City of Lost Children and Batman & Robin. Lamorlette also contributed to a number of Buf ‘s commercials for clients such as Coca-Cola, Michelin, Loreal, Perrier, Subaru, M&M/Mars, Reebok, Ford, Hewlett-Packard and Toyota. His music videos include work for Bjork and The Rolling Stones.
In addition to Shrek, PDI is also in pre-production on a third feature, Tusker. In ’98, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences recognized PDI with a Technical Achievement Award for the overall concept and architecture of the studio’s proprietary animation system. Established in ’80, PDI employs nearly 300 people.
