Director Joe Chapura has joined Sandbank Films, New York. For the past four years Chapura was with New York-based Big Picture Communications (BPC), where his credits included the World Wrestling Federations (WWF) Family Entertainment via its in-house agency, Stamford, Conn.; Kozmo.coms Goodfellas and Cheatin Heart for DiMassimo Brand Advertising, New York; and Sprites Glog for Lowe Lintas & Partners, New York.
His first scheduled directing job for Sandbank is the North Kansas City Hospitals Pavillion via Muller & Company, Kansas, Mo.
Chapura graduated from Bostons Emerson College of Communications in 81 and joined local television station WCVB-TV, where he developed promos. In the mid- to late 80s he produced and directed promos and spots for Spotwise Agency and Vizwiz, both of which are now closed.
In 91, I moved to New York to direct in this market, said Chapura. He joined the now defunct Beechurst Films, a production company that was part owned by feature director Michael Apted. Following a two-year stint as a freelancer, he signed with BPC in 96.
Big Picture recognized my ability to direct comedy and helped me get my comedy career going, noted Chapura. [But] sometimes you have to date a little bit before you find the right relationship. And it really feels like a strong relationship with Sandbank. Theyre kind of the Athinking mans production company.
Chapura said hes forever a student of comedy, forever experimenting with comic timing. His background as a film student informs the spots development: When I first saw the script [for Kozmo.coms ACheatin Heart, which features the line You gonna go out for that?], it just hit me over the head; [the approach] was so obvious. My idea was to lend it a more 50s production style-black and white, single camera, single angle, jump cuts-keep it very simple. It was written in such a way that it just felt like it was begging to be done that way. The agencys idea was different. My background in terms of a film student enabled me to come up with an approach that was really suitable for the idea.
