THE SPOTS
Three :30s promote the social aspects of football. "Front Porch" features a young man sitting with his grandmother, watching an NFL game on television, when two of the boy’s friends drive by in a pickup truck. One of the guys asks the boy if he’d like to go into town with them to meet girls, but he decides to stay and watch the game with his grandma. "Meat Man" opens on the back view of a man seen in shadowy silhouette, as a voiceover intones, "Game day. It all comes down to this." Expecting to see a professional athlete emerge from the darkness, the viewer instead sees a regular Joe wearing an apron and carrying a plate of hot dogs, buns and hamburgers. As the man stays his course, the voiceover continues, "You’ve got home field advantage and a sympathetic crowd. Don’t blow it. You win here, you might just get the game at your house next week, too." Finally he reaches his destination: a flaming barbecue. "Sunday Morning" features a contrast between a football fan and his hero, Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George. Viewers witness the events of the day: George makes it to his locker room, where he puts on his uniform; elsewhere, his fan rises out of bed and throws on his #27 jersey. Both pat the Titans’ logo—George, as he runs out onto the playing field, and the fan, as he leaves his bedroom. As George wraps his wrists with athletic tape, the fan wraps his remote control. George high-fives his teammates, and the fan does the same with his guests who have arrived to watch the game. And finally, as George is seen basking in the glory of the game, the fan revels in the joy of his day.
