The 48th annual New York Festivals held its TV Cinema & Radio Advertising awards gala on Jan. 26 at the Hudson Theatre in New York’s Millennium hotel. Scoring the Grand Award for best commercial was the much lauded “Grrr” for Honda out of Wieden + Kennedy, London, and directed by Smith & Foulkes of Nexus Productions, London. The spot additionally scored a Gold WorldMedal in automotive, and was also honored with Gold for best original music/lyrics, which was created by the London office of bicoastal/international Amber Music.
A trio of spots–“Mini Mart,” “Parking Meter” and “Surprise Dinner”–for Ameriquest Mortgage out of DDB Direct, Los Angeles, and directed by Craig Gillespie of bicoastal/international MJZ, won the Grand Award for best campaign. The package also earned a campaign Gold in the banking/financial services/insurance category, and “Mini Mart” was singled out for a Gold in the same category.
The Grand Award for best creative/creative production achievement went to Carlton Draft’s “Big Ad,” out of George Patterson Y&R, Melbourne, and directed by Paul Middleditch of Plaza Films, Sydney. The spot also earned a Gold for best special effects, which were created by Animal Logic Sydney.
In the PSA/health/hygiene category, a Gold WorldMedal went to the American Legacy Foundation’s “Fatboys,” “Gumballs” and “Our Own Experts,” part of the “Truth” campaign out of Arnold Worldwide, Boston, and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami. Martin Granger of bicoastal/international Moxie Pictures directed the spots.
Top honors for cinema commercial were awarded to Stella Artois’ “Le Sacrifice,” out of Lowe, London, and directed by Frank Budgen of Gorgeous Enterprises, London. (Budgen is repped stateside via bicoastal Anonymous Content.)
Winning Gold for the shipping, cargo and courier category was FedEx’s “Top Ten,” directed by Bryan Buckley of bicoastal/international Hungry Man for BBDO New York. Kimberly-Clark’s “Jinxed,” out of JWT Brazil. Sรกo Paulo, was honored with a Gold for cosmetics/toiletries. Jarbas Angelli of Ad Studios, Sรกo Paulo, directed the spot. In the media promotion/print category, “Mother/Children” for L’Equipe spot newspaper was honored with a Gold. Jonathan Herman of 75, Paris, directed. In media promotion/broadcast, “Samurai” for the Shizuoka Broadcasting company won Gold. Jun Kawanishi of Spoon, Tokyo, directed the spot for Dentsu, Tokyo.
In travel/tourism, Gold went to Virgin Atlantic Airways “Love Story,” out of Net#work BBDO, Hyde Park, Johannesburg, and directed by Greg Gray of Velocity Films, Johannesburg and Cape Town. (Gray is repped stateside via Velocity@Crossroads, a division of Crossroads Films, bicoastal and Chicago.) In health and hygiene, a Gold WorldMedal was awarded to INPES Passive Smoking’s “Marie,” out of Foote, Cone & Belding, Paris, and helmed by Les Elvis of bicoastal/international @radical.media.
“Coffee,” for The Agency For Governmental Strategies out of McCann Erickson Romania, Bucharest, was honored with Gold in the corporate image/recruitment category. Radu Muntean served as the spot’s director. “Transparent,” for Metro de Madrid, was honored with Gold in the transportation category. Contrapunto, Madrid, was the agency on the spot.
CRAFT HONORS
Scoring a Gold WorldMedal for both direction and best animation/3-D was the Toohey’s Extra Dry spot “War of the Appliances,” out of BMF Advertising, Sydney. Graeme Burfoot of Filmgraphics, Sydney, directed the spot; effects were created by a team of artists at Animal Logic, Sydney.
Also scoring a Gold WorldMedal for direction was “Marathon” for SCA Hygiene Productions, out of agency Forsman & Bodenfors, Gothenburg, Sweden, and directed by Anders Skog of Anders Skog Films, Stockholm. The Gold for cinematography went to the Mercedes-Benz spot “Office,” out of Campbell Doyle Dye, London, and directed by Frank Budgen of Gorgeous. Alwin Kuchler served as DP on the spot.
A Gold for best computer animation/3-D went to Asics’ “Attacks,” out of Aimaq Rapp Stolle, Berlin. A Gold for editing went to Johnnie Walker’s “Possibilities,” for Diageo Taiwan, and cut by Holly Ho of Touches Ltd, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. A Gold WorldMedal for best performance went to Vodafone’s “Honest at Home,” out of JWT Germany, Frankfurt, and directed by Martin Schmid of Jo! Schmid Filmproduktion, Berlin.
A Gold honor for sound design went to adidas “Impossible Field,” directed by Daniel Kleinman of Kleinman Productions, London, for 180, Amsterdam. Sound design on the spot was created by 740 Sound Design, Santa Monica.
