For the fifth consecutive year, bicoastal/international MJZ topped the list of production companies honored at the AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the American Commercial, presented by the Association of Independent Commercial Producers. MJZ scored a dozen honors at the 19th annual AICP Show, which debuted this evening (June 8) at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Leading the charge for MJZ were directors Rupert Sanders and Tom Kuntz.
Commercials directed by Sanders scored five Show honors while spots helmed by Kuntz tallied four, with the remaining MJZ kudos, one apiece, going to work directed by Spike Jonze, Nicolai Fuglsig and Craig Gillespie.
Four of Sanders’ five honorees came on the strength of Xbox Halo 3: ODST’s “The Life,” a :90 for San Francisco agency T.A.G., which was recognized in the Production, Cinematography (DP Greig Fraser), Editorial (editor Eric Zumbrunnen of Final Cut), and Visual Effects (VFX studio Asylum) categories.
The Sanders-directed Absolut Vodka :60 “Anthem,” out of TBWAChiatDay, New York, garnered an honor in the Visual Style category.
Meanwhile Kuntz–who earlier this year won the DGA Award as best commercial director of 2009–saw his four AICP Show honors highlighted by taking the Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial category (best-of-show spot) for Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Can Smell Like,” a :30 from Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, Ore. The Old Spice commercial also was honored in the Performance/Dialogue and Humor categories. Another Kuntz-helmed commercial, Fruit by the Foot’s “Replacement” for Saatchi & Saatchi, New York, also came up a winner in the Humor category.
Each category of the AICP Show may have up to three honorees, except for Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial, and Advertising Excellence/Campaign, which are reserved for a single honoree each, making those pieces Best in Show. While “The Man Your Man Can Smell Like” earned such distinction in the Commercial category, judges deemed there was no deserving honoree in the Advertising Excellence/Campaign category this year.
Rounding out the MJZ field of honorees were: the Gillespie-directed “Road Trip” for Snickers and BBDO New York, which gave MJZ a clean sweep of the Humor category; the Jonze-directed “I’m Here Trailer” for Absolut Vodka, which earned an Original Music honor (composer Aska Matsumiya; sound design from Squeak E Clean); and the Fuglsig-helmed Barclay’s “Fake” for Venables, Bell & Partners, San Francisco, which earned a Production Design (production designer Jeremy Hindle) win.
@radical, Biscuit
Next up in the production house derby were bicoastal/international @radical.media and Los Angeles-based Biscuit Filmworks with five Show honors apiece. The tally for @radical spanned honors in both Agency Art Directing (Dave Arnold) and Agency Copywriting (Dave Weinstock) for Dos Equis’ “Treasure Chest” directed by Steve Miller for Euro RSCG New York; another in the Agency Copywriting (also Weinstock) category for Dos Equis’ “Jai Alai” helmed by Miller; a Next Product Integration winner for Toohey’s Extra Dry’s “6 Beers of Separation” directed by Zach Merck for agency BMF Australia; and Spec Spot recognition for Laura Ashley’s “Sasha” directed by Brett Froomer.
Three of Biscuit’s five honors were garnered in the Next categories of the Show competition–for Noam Murro-directed work for HBO out of BBDO New York. HBO’s “Imagine” integrated campaign won in the Next Integrated Campaign category. HBO’s Cube Film installation scored in the Next Experiential category. And the HBO “Imagine” website (www.hboimagine.com) gained a Next Website/Microsite honor. Biscuit’s other two Show honors came in the Cinematography (DP Simon Duggan) and Visual Effects (Framestore London) categories for the Murro-directed Jameson Irish Whiskey spot “Lost Barrel” out of TBWAChiatDay, New York.
Two companies–bicoastal/international Anonymous Content, and bicoastal Smuggler–registered four honors each, according to the AICP tally. Anonymous’ foursome consisted of: Levi’s “America,” a :60 directed by Cary Fukunaga for Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, which scored in the Visual Design, Cinematography (DP Darren Lew) and Editorial (editor Elliot Graham of Rock Paper Scissors) categories; and U.S. Cellular’s “Shadow Puppets” directed by Garth Davis for Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco, which took the Production category.
The Smuggler-produced “Human Chain,” directed by Brian Beletic for Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, earned honors in the Visual Style, Production and Editorial (editor Angus Wall of Rock Paper Scissors) categories. Smuggler’s fourth honor came in the Low Budget category for Nike’s “The Light” directed by Jaron Albertin for Wieden+Kennedy, Portland.
O Positive and The Sweet Shop each earned three Show honors. Two of O Positive’s came in the Performance/Dialogue category for a pair of Jim Jenkins-directed spots: Fed-Ex “Presentation Guy” for BBDO New York (cast of Jerry Rafkal, William Charlton and Brian McCaskill) and Virgin Atlantic’s “Becoming” for Y&R, New York (actor Lloyd Porter). “Becoming” also earned a Show honor in Agency Copywriting (Y&R writer Brandon Henderson).
Scoring for The Sweet Shop was the Mr. Hide-directed Toyota Prius commercial “Harmony” for Saatchi & Saatchi LA. “Harmony” registered in the Production Design (production designer Rick Kofoed), Agency Art Direction (Saatchi’s Tito Melega) and Musical Arrangement categories (arranger Petra Haden–with Beth Urdang of Agoraphone serving as musical supervisor).
Taking two Show honors apiece were Camp David Film, Stockholm, 1st Avenue Machine in N.Y., and Deep Local, Pittsburgh.
Camp David Film’s two honors came for the AMF “Caterpillar” spot directed by Filip Engstrom for Forsman Bodenfors, Stockholm, in the Animation (The Mill, Los Angeles) and Visual Effects categories (The Mill, Los Angeles).
Scoring for 1st Avenue Machine were two Aaron Duffy-directed jobs for Google: “Parisian Love” and Chrome Features. The latter, a web film out of BBH New York received a Show honor in the Next Viral/Web Film category. The “Parisian Love” :60, out of agency Google Creative Lab, was honored in the Original Music category (composer Jeremy Turner of Analogue Muse).
And Deep Local earned its honors on the strength of its role as a partnering production company on Nike Livestrong Foundation’s “Chalkbot” out of Wieden+Kennedy. “Chalkbot” garnered honors in the Next Experiential and Next Product Integration categories.
Directorial derby
Talent from SHOOT‘s New Directors Showcase earlier this year figured in the mix of single honorees in the AICP Show. For example, the directorial duo of Kris Belman and Scott Balcerek of Caviar saw their Gatorade “Replay” for TBWAChiatDay, Los Angeles, cop a Next Integrated Campaign honor. Also Showcase director Jessica Sanders, who has since signed with Epoch Films, took a Low Budget category honor for Sony’s “Jessica Sanders” out of agency 180LA. And yet another 2010 Showcase director, Bill Bruce, known for his long tenure at BBDO New York, had has AMP “Tune Out” :60 receive a Sound Design honor (Francois Blaignan via Sound Lounge). Bruce directed “Tune Out” via RSA Films, which is now his production house roost.
SHOOT Showcase directors from 2009 also made their mark at the 2010 AICP Show. For example director Pete Circuitt of Bitstate, London, and repped worldwide by The Ebeling Group, helmed Macy’s Yes, Virginia primetime CBS animation Xmas special, for Macy’s and JWT New York. Yes, Virginia was honored in the Next Product Integration category.
And ’09 SHOOT Showcase director Lapo Melzi took a ’10 AICP Show honor in the Student Commercial category for Cenric’s “Black Rose,” a :30 he did at the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and TV, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, under the aegis of instructor Laura Belsey (who directs commercials via C-Entertainment, New York).
In the overall competition, MJZ’s Sanders and Biscuit’s Murro topped the this year’s AICP Show directors’ derby with five honors apiece, followed by MJZ’s Kuntz who tallied four. Smuggler’s Beletic, Anonymous Content’s Fukunaga, O Positive’s Jenkins, The Sweet Shop’s Mr. hide, and @radical.media’s Steve Miller were all honored three times.
Agency tally
On the agency front, far and away outdistancing the field of honorees was Wieden+Kennedy, which was SHOOT‘s 2009 Agency of the Year. Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, scored a total of 14 honors, the only ad shop to reach double digits.
BBDO New York was next with six. Euro RSCG, New York, TBWAChiatDay, New York, and TAG San Francisco were each honored four times. Saatchi & Saatchi LA and Y&R New York snagged three honors apiece.
