GlobeCast, a global broadcast services provider, is undergoing a $7 million expansion and upgrade of its GlobeCast Studios, headquarters of the company’s North American operations.
Based in Miami, the current 70,000 sq. foot GlobeCast Studios is a full-service international teleport and television production facility with a client base of international programmers, including Casa Club TV, GEMS Television, HTV, Hallmark Entertainment Networks and MGM Latin America. In August, GlobeCast inked a deal with MTV Latin America to provide full-service production and occasional transmission services on the production of four projects: Top 20, a Latin American music countdown show; Top 10, a countdown of popular music from the U.S. Hispanic market; Conexion, an interactive TV series; and Hora Prima, a variety show featuring Latin American artists.
After completion of its expansion—slated for the end of first quarter 2000—the revamped GlobeCast Studios complex will be spread across 200,000 sq. feet on eight-and-a-half acres of land. The 150-employee Miami facility, which is already fully digital, will add high-definition production and transmission capabilities, as well as high-end postproduction, to its comprehensive menu of production and transmission services.
The broadcast center will also contain what’s being billed as the largest soundstage in South Florida, at 28,800 square feet. That space can accommodate large-scale productions (feature films, soap operas, live audience shows) or be broken down into three smaller individual studios ( one 140′ by 120′, and two others that are 100′ by 60′), depending upon a project’s needs.
The updated facility will additionally offer an on-site expendables department, four loading docks, easy access to staging areas and studios, on-site set building, control rooms, green rooms, make-up and dressing rooms, a tape library, a canteen and a waiting room for studio audiences.
The Miami project is part of GlobeCast’s $50 million plan to expand and upgrade its production and transmission capabilities across America over the next five years. In the U.S., GlobeCast operates international teleports in Los Angeles, New York and Miami; a video control center in Washington, D.C., and sales offices in Miami, L.A., New York, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City. GlobeCast North America is involved in every aspect of broadcast transmissions, including satellite network management, cable distribution, syndication, SNG (satellite news gathering) and business TV.
L.A. Expansion
GlobeCast recently initiated a $7.5 million expansion and upgrade of its L.A. broadcast center. Scheduled for completion by the end of this year, the project will add an extra 6,000 sq. feet to GlobeCast’s existing Southern California facility, including production and post capabilities. The resulting facilities will allow customers to produce and transmit in DTV, HDTV and any of the emerging standards.
In ’98, GlobeCast acquired Miami-based Hero Productions, a full-service international teleport and television production facility co-founded in ’92 by Robert Behar, who was the company’s president. Behar, now president/CEO of GlobeCast North America, is a 29-year veteran of the broadcasting industry who has managed over-the-air cable and satellite operations, including six years as COO at Telemundo Productions. Behar is also founding partner and former president/CEO of HTV, the first 24-hour, all-Spanish language television music network.
