Director Anouk Besson has signed for exclusive commercial representation with Epoch Films, the bicoastal house headed by executive producers Mindy Goldberg and Jerry Solomon. Besson was formerly repped for commercials by bicoastal/international The End, which was her first spot roost; she joined the company in ’95. Los Angeles-based sales rep Volker Fleck continues to rep Besson in Europe.
The director’s final jobs through The End were for the European market: A pair of dialogue spots for Schaibischw investment banking via Ogilvy & Mather, Frankfurt; and two spots for communications firm E-Plus out of Grey, Düsseldorf.
"She’s a real complement to our roster," said Solomon. "We hope to give her the chance to push herself, to get to the next level and see better creative, and to fulfill her potential."
Besson said several factors prompted her to shift representation to Epoch, namely the fact that her longtime friend and sales rep Dana Astrow of New York-based Astrow Ziegler had parted ways with The End when her firm underwent some restructuring (see SHOOT’s Rep Report, 5/26). Astrow, who is married to Solomon, continues to rep Epoch and Oil Factory Films, Hollywood, while her partner Peter Ziegler assumed exclusive representation of The End along with Stiefel+Company, Santa Monica. Both reps continue to handle East Coast sales for Spot Welders, Venice, Calif.
"Dana has been my number one supporter from the beginning," Besson said. "And I’ve always loved Epoch. I respect the work of their directors tremendously. The End did a lot to build my career, and I’m going to miss everyone there. I just want to keep growing as a director, and I hope this gives me the chance to do different types of work, more storytelling, narrative, quirky things, as well as things that are emotional. That always drives my work."
Besson graduated from Ramapo College, Mahwah, N.J., in ’87 and began working as a receptionist at now defunct The Partners’ USA. She moved up the ranks from production assistant to freelance art director before making her directorial debut in ’93 on a spec PSA for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. She later helmed two more specs—for the Robinhood Foundation and Mac Cosmetics—before signing with The End.
Over the past five years, Besson has helmed ads for USPS, Dove, Eastern Bank, Target, Gateway, Home Savings and Chex. Her ’99 spot for Volkswagen via DDB Worldwide, Düsseldorf, was featured in SHOOT’s The Best Work You May Never See gallery (2/19/99, p. 15). The :30 shows a street-smart kid who sets up his shoeshine business next to a gleaming VW Passat. After passersby admire the car, they notice how poorly their shoes measure up and opt for a shoeshine.
Other noteworthy credits include a package of PSAs for God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that delivers food to the homes of HIV and AIDS sufferers. Ogilvy & Mather, New York, created the campaign, which consists of black-and- white documentary footage of the patients and the organization’s volunteers.
This year, Besson helmed the "I Can" campaign for Alta Mira investments via The Wolf Group, Toronto, which was produced by The Partners’ Film Company, Toronto. She also recently directed Amgen’s "Paula," about a breast cancer survivor, via McCann-Erickson, New York.
Besson joins an Epoch directorial roster that also includes Adam Bernstein, Paula Greif, Phil Morrison, Dewey Nicks and Jeff Preiss. Epoch is repped by Chicago-based Juliusson/Ratcliffe in the Midwest; and Santa Monica-based Stacey & Annie on the West Coast.
