The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced new eligibility guidelines for the 2021 Producers Guild Awards. In response to the closure of movie theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Producers Guild of America is temporarily adjusting its rules for eligibility for the Darryl F. Zanuck award to accommodate films that may be forced to have initial nontheatrical public exhibition or distribution. As the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and other industry organizations have shifted their rules, the Producers Guild will be permitting films initially made available on a commercial streaming or VOD service to qualify for awards eligibility.
Producers Guild of America presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher shared in a joint statement, “Each year, the PGA has the privilege to honor outstanding achievements in our field and celebrate the inspiring producers behind them. The current realities mandate that we make the necessary adjustments so that every deserving producer has the opportunity for their hard work and excellence to be recognized.”
Revised rules will be posted by the Producers Guild in the coming weeks, providing further details. All other eligibility requirements will remain in full force and effect until further notice. The Producers Guild reserves the right to amend these rules at any time, including when theaters reopen in accordance with federal, state and local specified guidelines.
