The International Cinematographers Guild (ICG, IATSE Local 600) has chosen eight honorees to receive the 2024 Emerging Cinematographer Awards (ECAs).
The 26th annual awards gala and reception will be held Sunday, September 29, at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center Wolf Theatre in North Hollywood.
The eight filmmakers and their short films, selected from 118 submissions, are:
–Dominic Bartolone, “Sweet Santa Barbara Brown”
–Adam Carboni, “INCOMPLETE”
–Matthew Halla, “The Unreachable Star”
–Jessica Hershatter, “Pirandello on Broadway”
–Allen Ho, “Iron Lung”
–Nick Mahar, “Sands of Fate”
–Dylan Trivette, “Bearing Witness: A Name & A Voice”
–Andrew Trost, “Bloom”
The ECAs are the only award event in the industry to prioritize exposure and recognition for early-career and emerging directors of photography. Submissions are open to Local 600 members who are not yet classified as DPs, and a panel of established ICG members from across the country assess submissions of short films, under 30 minutes in length.
“It’s an honor to shine a light on the emerging cinematographers who are bringing their exciting new visual styles to our industry,” said Baird B Steptoe, national president of the ICG. “We’ve seen so many ECA honorees move up the ranks to work as a director of photography. I have no doubt all these talented awardees will follow in those footsteps.”
Steven Poster, ASC, chair of the Guild’s ECA committee, said, “We have a rare opportunity with the ECAs to celebrate the full range of a guild member’s career, starting with their earliest days. We’re thrilled to celebrate the work of this year’s honorees.”
The Panavision family of companies returns as the Premier level sponsor, with Hawk Anamorphic also rejoining at the Bronze sponsorship level. ECA Partners also include Picture Shop, and Deluxe.
The awards ceremony will include the screening of the eight short films, with a reception to follow.
