Chris Franklin of Big Sky Editorial, New York, led the field of editors with three wins at the 10th AICE Awards honoring creative excellence in postproduction. The gala awards ceremony was held last night (5/17) on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The Franklin-cut American Express “Geoffrey Canada” TV spot–directed by Scott Hicks of Independent Media, Santa Monica, for Ogilvy & Mather, New York–won in the Dialogue, Montage and Best of New York categories. The three wins added to what is now a total of 16 career AICE Awards for Franklin since the inception of the competition, the most received by any single editor.
Right behind Franklin on the 2011 AICE Award roll of honor were editors Jim Haygood of bicoastal Union Editorial and Stewart Shevin of Beast Detroit with two wins apiece. Haygood’s pair of awards came on the strength of Volkswagen Passat’s “The Force” which topped the Automotive and Best of Los Angeles categories; Automotive was one of three new categories for this year’s AICE Awards. “The Force” was directed and shot by Lance Acord of Park Pictures for Deutsch LA.
A decision to extend the qualifying period for the 2011 AICE Awards through Feb. 6 proved fortuitous for Haygood in that it made work that aired on the Super Bowl eligible; “The Force” made its on-air debut during the Big Game.
Meanwhile editor Shevin’s two wins came in the Spec Spot and Best of Detroit categories for Stop Human Trafficking’s “Human Trafficking,” a client-direct assignment directed by Paul Santana of Rabbit.
Company tally
Beast and Big Sky topped the AICE Awards tally for companies with four apiece. In addition to the Shevin-edited Stop Human Trafficking spot which topped the Spec and Best of Detroit categories, editor David Blackburn of Beast Los Angeles won the Music/Sound category for adidas’ “MiCoach,” and editor Doug Walker of Beast San Francisco cut Intel’s “Ballet” which took the Best of San Francisco category. Joseph Kahn of bicoastal/international HSI directed “MiCoach” for 180 Amsterdam. Simon McQuoid of bicoastal Imperial Woodpecker helmed “Ballet” for Venables Bell & Partners, San Francisco.
Three of Big Sky’s four wins were for the aforementioned AmEx “Geoffrey Canada” spot; the fourth came in the New/Emerging/Alternative Media category for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) eight-minute film titled No Autographs cut by Big Sky’s Val Junge and Miky Wolf, and directed by Bryan Buckley of Hungry Man.
Four editorial houses earned two AICE Awards each:
o Union for the Haygood-cut VW spot “The Force,”
o Cut+Run LA for the Steve Gandolfi-edited Coca-Cola “Border” spot which topped the Comedy category (directed by Adam Hashemi of Furlined, Santa Monica, for Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, Ore), and the Jay Nelson-edited “Deprogramming” for Hyundai which took the Design category (helmed by the Stylewar collective’s Oskar Holmedal of Smuggler for agency Innocean Americas, Huntington Beach, Calif.).
o Arcade Edit, Los Angeles, for the Christjan Jordan-cut PlayStation package of :60s–“Epic,” “Distractions” and “What Are You Waiting For?”–which won National Campaign honors (directed by Frank Todaro of bicoastal/international Moxie Pictures for Deutsch LA), and the Paul Martinez-edited MontanaMeth :30s “Ben,” “Jessica” and “Kevin” which earned Regional Campaign distinction (directed and shot by Wally Pfister of Independent Media for Venables Bell & Partners, San Francisco.
o And bicoastal Rock Paper Scissors won in the Fashion/Beauty and Storytelling categories. The latter was for Xbox’s “Hope-Longform” spot edited by Angus Wall (and directed by Noam Murro of Biscuit Filmworks, Los Angeles, for agency215, San Francisco). Rock Paper Scissors’ Ted Guard cut Lee Jeans’ “The Walker” which topped the Fashion/Beauty category (directed by Jason Albertin of Smuggler for Ogilvy & Mather, Shanghai).
Fashion/Beauty and Regional Campaign were the other two new AICE Award categories this year. Automotive and Fashion/Beauty became the first to recognize postproduction achievement in specific product categories; and Regional Campaign was launched to acknowledge worthy campaign work that didn’t reach a national audience.
Rounding out the rundown of winning editors were: Robert Ryang of P.S. 260, New York, who topped the Music Video category for “Destroy,” for the group Japanese Popstars; Doobie White of Therapy, West L.A., who won in the Public Service category for “Split Decisions,” for the Alabama District Attorney Association and Zerometh.org; Susan Munro of Hybrid Edit, Santa Monica, who won in the Under $50,000 category with the Doritos spot titled “House Sitting”; Roy Simons of Panache Editorial who copped Best of Boston honors for Four Seasons’ “Iced Tea”; Jan Maitland of Utopic who picked up the Best of Chicago trophy for Samsung Mobile’s “Graphic Artist”; Richard Gillespie of Fast Cuts Edits who won the Best of Dallas award for “Paperless Office,” “The Workflow” and “To Do List” for Domtar Paper; Brody Howard of Ditch who garnered Best of Minneapolis distinction for American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning’s “Fans”; and Ross Birchall of Bijou Editorial who earned the Best of Toronto award for PepsiCo Canada/Tropicana’s “Arctic Sun.”
There was also a SHOOT New Directors Showcase presence in the AICE Awards winners’ circle. The Doritos “House Sitting” spot–which topped the AICE’s Under $50,000 category–helped earn director Tynesa Williams a Showcase slot earlier this month. Williams is not yet affiliated with a production house. And editor Doug Walker of Beast San Francisco, whose work won AICE’s Best of San Francisco category, made the New Directors Showcase for his helming of the documentary RHAG. Walker is repped by production house Mirror Films, Los Angeles.
Hall of Fame; L.A. In 2012
Besides the category awards, the AICE bestowed its coveted Hall of Fame induction honor upon editor Barry Stilwell, former partner in editorial houses jumP and prior to that Dennis Hayes & Associates. Stilwell’s work crosses the spectrum of advertising genres and creative approaches, stretching over a 20-year period from the late 1980s to his retirement in 2007. It ranged from the iconic and visual effects-heavy Diet Coke “Dance” spot, in which Paula Abdul dances with Gene Kelly and Groucho Marx, to the Fallon “Kitty Hawk” spot for United Airlines that recreates the first flight of the Wright Brothers, to the music video-inspired “Irresistible” spot starring the late Robert Palmer for Pepsi. The latter was one of Stilwell’s first New York editorial jobs.
“Barry’s work throughout his career was masterful,” said Dennis Hayes, himself an AICE Hall of Fame inductee in 1998. “He knew how to make ’em laugh, how to make ’em cry and how to make ’em stand up and cheer. I’m hard pressed to think of anyone who deserves this honor more than him.”
Additionally, during the evening awards gala proceedings, AICE saluted the winners of its annual Camp Kuleshov trailer editing contests for assistant editors, which were held by AICE chapters around the country.
The AICE Awards presentation returned to New York for its 10th year, which is where the competition originated in 2001. The awards gala rotates each year from New York to Chicago to Los Angeles. The AICE Awards Show will head West in 2012 where the gala will be hosted and produced by the Los Angeles chapter.
