A product demonstration commercial for a golf club shaft is not typically the stuff from which agency creative dreams are made. But Phoenix-based advertising shop E.B. Lane managed to bring something new and different to that proposition in this :60 for Scottsdale, Ariz.-based golf shaft and grip manufacturer Royal Precision.
Pro golfer Lee Janzen is seen walking with his caddy through an outdoor carnival. Suddenly, Janzen finds himself being heckled by a skinny guy at the dunk tank booth. Tired of being berated, Janzen refuses the three softballs at $1, instead opting to use his five-iron and three golf balls.
He tees up as carnival-goers form a gallery like one would see during a golf tournament. The gallery of rabid golf fans is transfixed on Janzen; several are carrying "Quiet Please" signs to ensure that their hero is not distracted from his target.
With utter poise as if on the fairway, Janzen swings his club, sending the ball to its intended bulls-eye destination and dunking the heckler. A super then appears on screen, simply reading: "Accuracy."
The spot returns to Janzen and his caddy who are walking away from the carnival booth. The caddy is carrying a huge teddy bear prize as if it were a golf bag full of clubs.
"Dunk Tank" was directed by Kenny That via Convergence Films, Orlando, Fla. Wendy That served as producer. The commercial was lensed on location in Orlando by DP Mark Trengove.
The creative ensemble for E.B. Lane consisted of creative director Bruce Nilsson, creative director/art director Jeff Miraglia, copywriters Jenny Moss and Jeff Valentine, and executive producer/producer Pam Parsons.
