For many in the Sunshine State, summer means 98-degree days and taking life easy. But for composer/producer Don Hughes of Don Hughes Music (DHM/ FL), this past July meant pro-active change, including bringing on board a co-partner, composer/producer/arranger Greg Sims, and relocating the company to the Winter Park neighborhood of Orlando, after 18 years in Vero Beach.
Explaining the moves, Hughes pointed out, "The major music houses in New York and Chicago, like Elias or JSM, have several composers [to choose from]. I want to offer the same thing." In addition, Hughes noted that his previous shop, though seductively located on the beach, was an hour-and-half’s drive from Orlando. That didn’t suit big-city producers: "They always need the job done yesterday," he stated.
Hughes met Sims when the two collaborated on a Florida Hospital spot campaign a few months ago. Before coming on board, Sims had spent nine years composing and producing on a freelance basis out of Orlando. His credits over that time include scoring the video Magic Moments in Golf, for PGA Golf Tours Productions, St. Augustine, Fla. He also has written a symphony, United Arts’ Appalachian Sketches, performed by the Orlando Youth Orchestra.
Out of Winter Park to date, Hughes and Sims have co-scored Toyota’s "Tell It Like It Is" via Saatchi & Saatchi, New York; and Rider Sandals’ "Surf Through Hell" via Cramer-Krasselt Advertising, Orlando. The new studio includes a MOTU Digital Performer and 2408mkII, and two recording rooms. Hughes serves as the shop’s national rep.
