Commercial and music video director Andrew Hines has joined RSA Films for spots worldwide. This marks the first career commercialmaking representation for Hines who’s made his mark in music videos at Black Dog Films, a sister shop to RSA. Last week several new Hines-directed projects debuted, including the music video “Here In Spirit” for My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, i Am Other artist Buddy’s “Shine,” and an Ad Council PSA titled “Listen,” which portrays the power of empathetic listening and awareness for people in recovery. The PSA came out of content agency Viacom Velocity and was produced by RSA. The :30 first aired during a 30-minute commercial-free TV special on Friday called Listen: Facing Addiction in America on Viacom media networks.
Hines’ work also includes 2015 MTV VMA winner “One Man Can Change The World,” Big Sean’s elegiac promo featuring Kanye West and John Legend, and an interactive film for TriBeCa’s ReActor experience—the world’s first computerized acting judge—via JWT NY, which won a Cannes Silver and two Bronze Lions.
“I was raised amidst nature and beauty of Nova Scotia, Canada,” Hines said. “When I discovered the power of film in my youth, a whole new world of creativity and adventure opened up. I looked to filmmakers like Spielberg, Malick, Fincher, Jodorowsky; but most of all, Ridley and Tony Scott have been championing my career and interests from afar for so long. This is a real life dream come true to walk the same halls as the very visionaries who inspired me to strive towards my own goal of becoming a director. I’m honored beyond measure to call RSA my home.”
The past five years have been prolific for Hines, who after earning a master’s degree from American Film Institute, went on to direct commercials such as Nike Basketball’s “Be Courageous,” featuring jazz pianist Robert Glasper, Gillette’s “Rusty Bottoms” with singer/songwriter Robert Ellis, and a brand film for L’Oreal that tells the origin story of men’s grooming line Baxter of California. And he has directed additional music videos for Juicy J ft. Kanye West, Beyoncรฉ artists’ Chloe x Halle, The Head and The Heart, among others.
“We’ve believed in Andy’s talent for a long time,” said Jules Daly, president of RSA Films. “He is incredibly creative and driven, and has directed some of Black Dog’s most inspired music videos over the past few years. The timing is perfect to welcome him to RSA for commercials and content. His strength as both a storyteller and resourceful collaborator will be a great asset to our clients.”
