Animation studio Curious Pictures has brought in a new executive producer of commercials, Mary Knox. She takes over the position held by company partner David Starr who now becomes the shop’s executive producer of branded entertainment. Additionally, Curious has fortified its directorial roster, adding the team of Ugly (Abraham Spear and Rohitash Rao) and taking on representation for Baltimore animation house Buoyant Duck.
Knox most recently served as a partner at New York-headquartered independent rep firm Commercial Artists Management. She played a lead role in bringing Ugly and Buoyant Duck into the Curious fold, and is known for helping to uncover new creative and directorial talent. Earlier in her career, Knox was the editor of SHOOT.
Meanwhile Starr’s prime focus turns to the branded content/specialized marketing arena. Curious has already made inroads into this sector with branded entertainment projects for such clients as AOL, Mattel and Burger King.
The aforementioned directorial additions also figure to make their mark in both spots and branded content. Ugly gained inclusion into Saatchi & Saatchi’s New Directors Showcase earlier this year. The duo recently wrapped a multi-spot, integrated branding campaign for Fuel TV, FOX Sports’ new extreme sports network. In addition to working in spots, Ugly intends to add to Curious’ capabilities in the emerging market for short animated films that can be downloaded and viewed on cell phones.
James Proimos is the animation director for Buoyant Duck. He comes aboard Curious’ roster of directors. Proimos is currently working on projects for National Geographic TV and Film, as well as an animated feature for Nickelodeon Movies. Over the years, Buoyant Duck’s work has garnered recognition at the Clios, The One Show and the Cannes International Advertising Festival.
