NEW YORK-Veteran colorist Joe Bond retired last week after 41 years in the industry. He was employed at Post Perfect, New York, the company he co-founded in 1986.
Post Perfect has also brought in some new staffers, including VP of operations Carol McCoy, editor/compositor Rob Padva and producer Larry Shore. Additionally, Dean Winkler, president of Post Perfect and COO of parent company New York Media Group, said VP of operations Peter Leveris has left the company, while VP of production services Mark Yang would soon be shifting from Post Perfect to another New York Media Group venture. He declined to discuss details at press time.
Bond worked as a TV producer, director and cameraman before beginning his career as a colorist in January 1970. At the time, Bond was employed at now defunct Teletronics, where a team of engineers came up with a rudimentary color-correction method using a General Electric camera.
Bond and co-worker Sid Sherman initially handled color correction using this method. Bond explained that color correction remained in this rudimentary state for several years, although more companies developed their own in-house procedures. The move toward computer control occurred around 1975, he said.
In 1986 Bond helped found Post Perfect, which took possession of one of the first da Vinci color correctors in New York. The company’s first colorist, Bond remained at Post Perfect until ’92, when he moved to now defunct Editel/New York. Following Editel’s closure in ’96, he returned to Post Perfect.
"I’ve been doing this for 41 years," he said, explaining his decision to retire. "I feel young and healthy. I have a family. It’s time to smell the roses." Bond looked forward to spending more time with his family, sailing, playing golf and trying some new hobbies. He said he is also considering a go at local politics.
Bond said of his career, "I had a great ride. I made a million friends. I love the people I’ve worked with."
"We wish him the best," Winkler said. "Joe is the original colorist and still one of the best."
McCoy joined Post Perfect after three years at Rhinoceros Editorial, New York, where she most recently was VP of operations. "I’ve always loved the people here," she enthused. She complimented the "versatility" of Post Perfect’s talent pool and technological capabilities.
Padva arrived from PrinczCo Productions, New York, where he served as an editor/compositor/designer. He has edited for clients such as Sony MiniDisc, NicodermCQ, ESPN and Scotts. Earlier, he edited at Editel/New York.
Shore arrives from Charlex, New York, which he joined in 1991 as an entry-level staffer. He worked his way up to night manager, during which time he was involved in overseeing productions. At Post Perfect, he is currently producing several PSAs and a corporate video for the United Nations via New York-based production company Hey!
