The London International Awards has unveiled the winners and finalists in TV/Cinema and Online Film. After extensive deliberation, the TV/Cinema and Online Film jury–under the aegis of Daniel Fisher, global executive creative director of Unilever and special projects, Ogilvy–awarded 24 statues and six entries attained finalist status in TV/Cinema. In the Online Film category 21 statues were awarded and seven entries attained finalist status.
The TV/Cinema category celebrates commercial film made for broadcast television and/or cinema, which demonstrates exemplary ideas and executions. In this category, the jury awarded a Grand LIA, seven Gold, nine Silver, and seven Bronze Statues, as well as seven Finalists. In this year’s Grand LIA winner, BETC Paris captivated jurors with “Papa” for CANAL+. Directed by Dario Fau via production company Blue Paris, “Papa” takes us to the hospital room of an elderly man whose life seems to be at the proverbial end of the line. As a tribute to him, his grandson plays the violin–rather poorly. The hospital patient seemingly flatlines with his closest relatives present. But when the lad stops playing the violin, the old man comes to life as his monitor goes from flatline to a viable heart rate and blood pressure. This on-again, off-again pattern continues with the violin playing seemingly serving as the catalyst. Eventually we learn that the lad’s young sister is having some fun, pulling the vital signs monitor off her grandpa’s finger–and then back on again when it suits her. The lesson is that French entertainment network CANAL+ is adept at finding and presenting short films–with big drama.
The LIA Online Film category recognizes the exceptional work created primarily for release on digital platforms, showcasing a combination of outstanding ideas, executions, and superb craftsmanship. The jury awarded a Grand LIA, six Gold, five Silver, and nine Bronze Statues, as well as seven finalists. The Grand LIA in this category went to DDB Chicago for “Apologize the Rainbow”, created for Skittles.
Jury president Fisher remarked, “This year, we saw a return of humor. We saw a lot of comedy. The two Grand LIAs we gave were comedy spots.” He went on to share that as soon as he and his judging colleagues saw “Papa,” they knew it was a Grand Prize contender.
Barbara Levy, LIA president and founder, said, “The jury was very meticulous. They gave their time and expertise to make sure that every piece of work that was awarded was well deserving. We are very happy that there is a Grand LIA for both TV/Cinema and Online Film. Both films set the bar by marrying beautifully exceptional ideas with world-class technique.”
